Today IT Occurred To Me That I,.........AM A FRED!

Went on a ride to test some new tires today. IRC Redstorms rec'd by BF'er Socalrider. It was hot and dry here in the IE compared to the coast but don't worry about me, I managed. I get to DayCreek Park then stop to tinkle. On the way out of the lil boyz room, I decide to take a pic of the new tires. As I take the picture, I look around and the guys on dept store bikes and $10 Bell helmets slanted on the side of their heads look over at me and give me the "darn dude, you are a Fred!" look. Oh well, I'm riding that's what matters !

So on the way back home I look down at the tire. I notice that yes, I am a Fred. MTB shoes, SPD pedals, frame pump, triple crank and Smiley face socks!....I start to thinking, I am way off from the cool kids! I ride heavy Deep V's. None of the cool fancy rims that accelerate and climb faster! No fancy $300 road shoes to eliminate hotspots. WTF are hotspots anyways? Always used cheap shoes and never had hotspots!

Oh well, A Fred I will remain!

$18 IRC RedStorm. Rode $60 GP 4000 and can't tell a difference other than the RS measures fourty thousandths more narrow than the GP with the calipers. I must be a Fred!

Ahhh, the frame pump. MTB shoes and the Smiley Face socks!...No, I will never shave 'em!

I was just looking at a frame pump as a back up to CO2. Will I become a Fredrica if I carry it in my back pocket? I live in Silverlake so I need to stay cool.

Well if my memory swerves me right, you showed up for The Bear without a pump, spare tube or a jacket. So whatever you become, it's gotta be an improvement!

Jus had'ta, you set yerself up for that one!

Darn. Why do you have to tell all my business? I had CO2's and tube repair kit.

Every rider has some degree of Fred-ness, it's just a matter of how much. Most don't want to admit this but it's true.

RE: the $18 vs. $60 tires, I think the difference comes in longevity. I'll spend $50-60 on a tire if I can get 5000-6000 miles out of it with minimal flats. Haven't found an $18 tire that'll do that for me (but would love it if you did and tell me what it is!).

Well, the IRC Redstorm tire is $18 each or $34 for a set on Pricepoint. I read some reviews on a review dot com site. SOme said the Redstorm lasted longer than the Conti's. Sum mixed reviews but overall , most were good.

Only thing I noticed is that they are a little more narrow than the GP (.040). If anything, I would say this "MAY" make for a smoother ride in the GP's favor (I didn't notice). But they are the same width as the Ultra Race which is $30-$35 for a folding 700X23.

You can get a little mini pump that mounts under your bottle cage. Works as a back-up to co2. You could then be a Wilma.

Beanz, I anyone gives you crap about your Fredishness just challenge them to a Greco-Roman wrestling match. That will shut them up.

  • Frame pump: check.
  • Saddle level with bars: check.
  • SPD pedals: check (unless I swap back to clips and straps, and if I don't feel it in the first hundred miles, then there ain't no such thing as hotspots on these feet).
  • MTB shorts: check.
  • Goofy socks: check.
  • Hairy legs: check.
  • Long sleeved running shirt instead of cycling jersey: check (significant reduction in blistering sunburns).
  • Triple rings: check (on the touring bike).

However, on the Steamroller:
  • Expensive tires: check (but with a LBS hookup, they're not *that* expensive).
... wait: what does fixed gear do to my fred-ish-ness?

Oh no. Am I a hipster fred??
Gack!!

I would be more concerned with addressing the fact that you feel comfortable using the term 'tinkle' for urinating...

It was fate Beanzer,

Nothing you could do about it. Your Mom and Dad named you Fred before you were old enough to have a say in the matter. Course, then your Dad nick-named you Mr. Beanz, so you were blocked in (name-wise) from both sides.

I say just live with it and no worries, you know?

You guys are a little late to the party...

Dedicated to Mr. Beanz

Born Fred, as Fred as the wind blows
As Fred as the grass grows
Born Fred to follow your heart

Live Fred and beauty surrounds you
The world still astounds you
Each time you look at a star

Stay Fred, where no walls divide you
You're Fred as the roaring tide
So there's no need to hide

Born Fred, and life is worth living
But only worth living
'cause you're born Fred

(Stay Fred, where no walls divide you)
You're Fred as the roaring tide
So there's no need to hide

Born Fred, and life is worth living
But only worth living
'cause you're born Fred

WOW! Alicestrong you owe me bigtime for having just read that. I'm not sure what you owe me yet. I think I will put it in the form of a poem, but first I need to ride down to the rest room at 6th and alvarado so that I can copy down the foundation of my poem from the rest room wall. If I recall there was a good version of the Nantucket series of poems in stall #2.
