Is 39 climbable?
I took a drive on 39 today and I saw that it's closed a few miles north of the intersection with East Fork Road. When does it reopen to vehicular traffic? Are bikes OK?
Thx.
Thx.

We were up there yesterday, and it was a spectacular day. We got within a mile or two of AC, before the road was more suited for mountain bikes. I've only been up there when the gate was closed, but this site looks like a good resource: https://www.crystallake.name/road.htm

The top section has been closed to cars since the late 70s. The bottom section has been closed for a few years. I think it's actually closed to bikes but I've only rarely heard of anyone getting turned back on a bike. There will be a car from time to time as there are residents up there. I'm the fat one in the above pic, btw.

This has been discussed on here before. There is a sign right after the gate that mentions bicycles in the list of "forbidden users." The general consensus is that you probably won't get in any trouble for it - and I rode past several rangers on it once - but it's not out of the question. It's a fun ride, but note that there aren't any services (water, etc.) up there.

It is when the snow melts off, which could be any time now. There are lots of rocks on the road and even when they clean the rocks off there are lots of sharp edged holes to cut a tire. Just descend that part slowly.

My #1 ride!!!! Love it love it love it, just make sure you have plenty of tubes and extra gear since you'll be the only one up there for miles... but that's the best part right?
I took these pics in the summer of '09

but be warned, it is literally 24miles uphill to Dawson's Saddle, no rest
