Anyone camp out on Tof C stage route?
Was thinking of getting a friend of mine that has a motor home to head up the Crest ( yes, I know, via Tujunga and all) to spend the Thursday night before Stage whatever up near Dawson Saddle. Thought that would likely be a KOM point, seeing how it is the high point of the stage and all. Was just wondering what we could expect on the route, as far as party atmosphere and such. All I have ever seen was what was on T.V. Anyone ever camp out on a stage route before?

I wonder if the Forest Service would allow that since the forest is technically closed to all except use of the roads. You probably wont see much since they go by so fast but it is fun none the less.

Bill, there really isn't any need to claim a spot that far in advance. If you get there a couple hours before the anticipated ETA, it's usually enough time to enjoy a little pregame activity while waiting for the 30 second opportunity to watch the race pass by. Bob may have a point though about the forest closure. Might be good to check that out with one of the local forest service offices.

With all the climbing on Stage 6, I thought I would go spend the day in the mountains at Big Bear, and watch the race on the big screen at the finish line. VS. will only show a hour and half at most, why not watch the whole race and all the climbs.

I'm planning on viewing some of these stages (Big Bear or Ventura) but this would be my 1st time. How far in advance do they close roads? I mean would one be able to expect drive up to BB up 2, 3, 5 hrs before the ETA? Is it accessable by bike (given enough time)? So what will access to these place be like?

In hilly stages, they'll close the roads for 2-hours before or longer. Get there early. Especially as there is limited access.

Even if the campgrounds are open, which they might be, they aren't going to let you camp out along the road. At least they never have before.
When they have closed the roads to cars we still have been able to ride up on our bikes. When the racers are getting close the CHP will sweep the roads. Be out of the way at that point.
