Yup, as long as the snow is cleared (which it is at this point in the season), you can ride it to Angeles Crest.

Wow that's an interesting map showing the potable spring water at Falling Springs. I've been drinking there for years.:innocent:

Hmmmmm, guess that explains it.:D

Ben FR 09-02-10 02:06 PM

What is the elevation gain from East Fork Road to Angeles Crest?

rallison 09-02-10 02:23 PM

From West Fork (1600) to Angeles Crest (6800) is about 5200 ft of gain. East Fork should be similar but slightly higher.

rallison 09-02-10 02:37 PM

Also, you can turn right on Angeles Crest and finish the climb by going to Dawson Saddle at 7901 ft, adding 1100 ft to your previous total for 6300 ft of continuous climbing. See my report here.

Sweet rallison, thank you.

Make sure to take and post pics, as that would be a nice long ride with lots of gain. Once up to Crystal Lake, elevation should help keep temps a little more under control. Make sure to leave nice and early, as it is going to be over 100 down here in the valleys.:50:

Epic. I was curious and mapped the whole thing out - over 100 miles and ~12,000 ft of climbing! Nice. I wish I could join you, but I'll be up in SB this weekend.

Hope you're starting early - high temperature for Saturday at the base is predicted to be 97.

Edit: Looks like hillbasher beat me to it with the heat warning.

Ben FR 09-02-10 10:02 PM

I'll take some pics and post a ride report. I'm not going to try to beat the heat necessarily. Want to simulate hot conditions for everest challenge training.

vertical bob 09-03-10 12:38 PM

In this heat don't forget the cold spring water coming out of the mtn at about the 4000ft. mark

Ben FR 09-03-10 12:53 PM

What are the temps going to be like tomorrow from 8a-3pm? How will the temps vary at 1k ft going up to 7k ft?

vertical bob 09-03-10 03:45 PM

Hot !!!!!! http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick...&FcstType=text This is exactly at Islip saddle. Junction 39&2

They are going to be HOT, DAMN HOT. And ask anyone who has done this ride, it is all exposed and open to the sun. There is no shade, and once you start up 39, it will be a suffer fest to the max. A 3 AM start would be in your interest. But like I said before, take and post pics, as we all want to see the pain. Don't be afraid to drink out of the spring at the switchback by the cabin on 39. Have been drinking from it for over 40 years and have never had a bad effect. And it should be nice and cold. Good luck.:50:

Ben FR 09-04-10 12:11 AM

Oh f***. Too late to change the course now. Wish me luck!
