Ride Around the Bear & Breathless Agony

What's the difference between these two rides? I've looked at the route maps for each, and they both appear to be roughly the same. Redlands to Onyx Summit and back. What am I missing?

Different routes... Ride Around the Bear, as it implied is a loop around front to the back side of Big Bear Lake. It finishes down from Onyx Summit. BA goes out in another direction and rides up the Redlands side to Onyx Summit....

you are correct that both reach Onyx Summit but from different directions.

For one thing BA does Oak Glen, a very steep few miles that some have to walk. I think it's a much harder ride.

Breathless Agony Starts out at the same location (Sylvan Park) but takes you south to San Timatao Rd then over to Moreno Valley to Jack Rabbit pass, then up the back side of Oak Glen then up Hwy 38 to Onyx summit. It has around 12,000 feet of climbing. Ride Around the Bear starts out at Sylvan park, takes you up Hwy 38 then brings you across through Hyland to Hwy 330. You climb Hwy 330 up to Running Springs then on the Big Bear Lake, then up the backside of Onyx Summit and back down Hwy 38 to Sylvan PK. This ride has around 9500 feet of climbing. Ride Around the Bear is a eaiser ride. Both rides are well supported. I've done Rider around the Bear twice on my Tandem and once solo. Breathless Agony twice on my single. If you love climbing you might also check out the KIng of the Mountain series.

Thanks JohnR. Are both of these rides do-able 'unsupported'? Ie are there places along the way for water/snacks? If so, where? I understand there are plenty of places to rest/refuel once in Big Bear, but what about water along the way?

Yes both rides are do-able unsupported. There stores along the way. I know that entries for both rides fill up fast. Breathless fills up in a matter of hours. And RAB fills up in a few days.

How big do these rides get? 100's or 1000's of participants?

I think Ride around the Bear is limited to 400 riders.

Thanks for the input! If I can drop my kid off with my folks in Fontana this morning, I might make a run for Onyx Summit!
