Those creeps knew exactly what they were going after and where it was located. They didn't know Alan Funt lives in the 'hood there though.

Don't forget to check Craigslist in other areas like Orange County, San Diego, Ventura and Santa Barbara.. I had a friend who had a bike stolen last year and it ended up being sold on San Diego Craiglist.. After some serious haggling he was able to meet the seller and got it back..

I'll second that- a friend had her bike stolen in Montreal about a year ago and I set up RSS readers to flag ads with keywords related to the bike (on every CL within about 200 miles). It showed up at a shop within a mile of where it was stolen about 4 days later. The shop owner took it off the thief's hands for next to nothing and posted the ad looking for the real owner.

It's already hit BSNY. It's only a matter of time.

"Anyway, judging from the description of the culprits, it would appear that the thieves were indeed cyclists:

As for whether they were roadies or triathletes, the trunk rack would suggest the latter, but the fact that they managed to get away without falling down for no reason points to the former."

Here's hoping the bikes are recovered and the thieves beaten to a pulp!

Those guys loaded up the bikes like they owned them - all calm and collected. A random passerby probably wouldn't have thought twice about these thieves.

As fast as they got the bikes, I have to wonder if the bikes were sitting on someones porch, open garage ?, backyard ? Weird.

The owner of those bikes needs to start looking at his network of friends. Those guys knew what they were looking for, where to find it, and knew when nobody was home.

IF you left those bikes outside, it is your fault! I always put my bike in our garage and lock it to a pipe.

I wonder if a forensic videographer could enhance the picture to capture a license plate.

Yeah, like on CSI. I think that is the problem with these video cams. The resolution sux. My next door neighbor has a bunch of cams that cover our drive way and the garage. So if anyone steals my stuff, it will be on his DVR. Just hope the resolution is good enough to use to catch the perps.

This doesn't make sense to me. Looks like a sophisticated video system but the bikes were unprotected? Seems like a $100 NY Fugettaboutit lock around them could have thwarted this.

Perhaps the camera was somebody elses.

Bold indeed. At 3am I would have stopped and asked them what they were doing. And I'm out at 3am a LOT.

It's possible, and I believe this has been brought up before, there is a safety/security concern for Garmin bike GPS users if you start recording the second you roll out your driveway and then share to the world your ride. Your location can be easily narrowed down to a few houses. Just a little stake out and down to the exact house. Just saying.

I thought about this when Garmin Connect came out and now start my computer away from my house at the nearest major intersection.

Is the original video digital or tape? If it's tape, there are a lot more things that can be done forensically to enhance the images.

I assume the police have been notified. If so, follow up with them and see if they can get a hold of some one at Target's (yes the store) forensic labs. Target has two complete crime labs and they do a lot of video forensic work. Last I knew, 6 of the top 9 forensic investigators in the world work for Target. They've been able to solve a ton of cases for numerous agencies world wide and they do it all for free. I work for Target and have had them help me with cases of my own that I was investigating. Granted, they were business related but you never know. If you need help getting a number for the PD, shoot me a PM.

Video appears edited for time constraints (YouTube limits, American attention span, etc.) but I would concur that these guys knew where they were going and when the bikes would be available and somewhat unprotected. How many people stage their gear for an early morning ride or event? Look at the posts made on social media about the events, figure out who can see those and then you will have an initial list of suspects.
Oh, and at 3AM there are not many people out and acting like you are robbing a house is the quickest way to make yourself look out of place. A person walking around like they own the place arouses ZERO suspicion and anyone asking the burglar what they were doing would have been answered politely with "heading out to a race in Solvang" which would have ended the conversation.

What a shame such a cute bike was stolen! Feel so sorry for the victim. It's likely the thieves had been to the area at least once before to check out the bike and surroundings, so they (maybe even the car) may have appeared in the video before that day. Maybe the video should be shown to the public, not just the bike forums, so some neighbors or acquaintance of the thieves may recognize them.
