Thanks for the heads-up Alice!

Last time I had a bike stolen I was in Iowa for RAGBRAI. Police recovered it four months later . . .

Rick Curious what did you do that the police ended up being able to recover it for you?

Bump for Rick...really I'm curious how you got your stolen bike back. That seems to be the exception...

Anybody else ever get a stolen bike back?

Hi Alice,

Yes, my bike was stolen out of the garage of our host home for the night in Ft. Dodge, IA back in approx. '87 or '88 along with the bikes of several other RAGBRAI'ers.

That was on Wed. and from our group, Annie Jeske's Cannondale and my Mercian were stolen. We filled out the police report with exact descriptions of the bikes (I remember I even drew a picture of the Mercian's Vincitore lugs; which were hand cut in Derbyshire, U.K.) to help with recovery.

And no, we didn't really ever expect to see them again. Fast Forward approx. 2 months later, after I'd filled out the insurance report and spec'd the replacement for the Mercian . . . Late one evening I got a call from Detective Somebody with the Ft. Dodge, IA Police Dept. that our bikes (mine and Annies's) had been recovered.

"Don't you need to keep them for evidence in the trial of the guy who stole them?" I asked.

"No, not at all." Detective Somebody replied, "We've got this guy on drug charges, sex with a minor and much larger robberies, so we won't need the bikes."

Luckily, the bicycle wholesale distributor where I worked at the time had an outside Rep who called on bike shops in Ft. Dodge, IA, so he was able to pick up our bikes from the Ft. Dodge Police and bring them back to St. Louis (which is where I lived at the time). Thankfully, when we got the bikes back, they were all there (no components stolen) except for my Pearl Izume gloves which were velcro'd to the handlebar of the Mercian.

So, bad news is we missed half of RAGBRAI that year, good news of course is that we eventually got the bikes back. I eventually rode that Mercian on Paris-Brest-Paris, and it is my touring bike to this day. Glad I still have it!

Any questions?
