Alta Alpina Challenge: Riding the Wild Sierra

Registration is now open for the 2011 Alta Alpina Challenge: Riding the Wild Sierra presented by the Alta Alpina Cycling Club .

Date: June 11 Start Location: Turtle Rock Park, Markleeville CA

The Alta Alpina Wild Sierra is actually 4 events on one day in Alpine County California and Carson Valley Nevada.

The Wild Sierra Metric is 64 miles and 5000 feet of relatively moderate climbing including Luther Pass and Blue Lakes Summit.

The Wild Sierra Century includes Daggett Pass, Ebbetts Pass East, and Monitor Pass West for 110 miles and 11,000 ft of climbing in the heart of the Tahoe Sierra.

The 5 Pass Challenge is the reverse of Alpine County's most famous ride plus Diamond Valley for 135 miles and 16,000 feet.

The 8 Pass Challenge is a California Triple Crown ride and just may be the "Worlds Toughest Double Century" at 198 miles and 20,300 ft of climbing including the famous summits such as Kingsbury (Daggett), Carson, Luther, Blue Lakes, Monitor and Ebbetts.

Four fully supported and challenging rides in the Wild Sierra

Ha! Just saw this....gotta love the humor. I guess paying to ride around in fast little circles on public roads is OK.

A couple of BF members who are friends did these rides last time and had nothing but good things to say about them. Sagebum and his cronies are reported to be cool people, too. I should get up there.

Thanks big john. I had a great time last year at the Breathless Agony and met a lot of good SoCal riders during the Wild Sierra. I know a certain vallygirl who is missing some awesome skiing here at Heavenly right now..........

She'll be coming back up for some skiing. I saw her yesterday and she said you put together a great ride around Virginia City.

That would be hilarious if I'd ever ridden in a criterium other than this one:

Free beer is not paying to ride.

That looks like fun, but those bikes are not going to make it up Ebbetts pass. I would love to see that race. Where is it?

I recognized that event before I saw the link. We live part time, 2-3 months of the year 8 miles from Fruita. Good one CE. Now if I could just get delivery to the Tahoe area of a large Stinky Deluxe pizza from the Hot Tomato in Fruita. Oh man....

Valleygirl....18-24 more inches at Heavenly since last night. Let me know if you need help digging out.

8 miles = Glade Park, Grand Junction, or Loma/Mack

The Icarus is my favorite pizza from the HT. Jen and Anne are quite rad. I haven't been to the new location yet, but have seen pics of the functional art/sign created by local GJ artisan Jon Rizzo. He's also responsible for this jive:

Actually, in the Redlands along Broadway...maybe less than 8 miles. A night ride across the Monument is one of my favorites.....don't gotta pay at night. ...but I have a parks card anyway.

Odd, when I lived on the Redlands, my address was "Grand Junction".

This place is in the Redlands and their address is Grand Junction: https://www.tworiverswinery.com/

Yep, very near Two Rivers Winery. I think their vineyard burnt to the ground two yeas ago and they had to start over but like most wineries in the Valley they buy grapes here and there. Reeder Mesa Winery is a fun place. You probably rode out there too then. https://reedermesawines.com/

Almost every road out there has been repaved recently.

Doesn't look much like wine country to me though.

Valleygirl.....our Heavenly block out days are over Sunday....let's all go ski.....let us know. The Fruita/Grand Junction/Grand Mesa area gets more press for the mountan biking but the road riding is excellent too.

Repaved, or did they use the tire-eating chipseal?

No stinkin' chip seal....the real smooth complete pavement overlay thing. Wish they would pave Land's End to the top all the way to CO 65. Otherwise it is really smooth in the fall cause' they grade it road bike smooth for the hunters.

Anyways, pay or not, come on up and ride here some time.

Land's End should remain dirt because it's a goofball filter. Thanks for the invite, but my riding preference remains in the dirt and when in Rome...

Thanks for all the registrations from SoCal riders! We are starting to process the mailed and emailed registrations and are working on a more streamlined web registration process such as Active.

Thanks for all the signups from SoCal. A good amount of snow still up on Monitor. Got about 4" in Markleeville yesterday, all gone today. Ebbetts is closed but plowed perhaps a third of the way up on the east side. Likely open by Memorial Day. We are looking forwaed to the stat of the Amgen on Sunday in South Lake Tahoe.

The forecast for this weekend and several days before and after is stellar! 70's and sunny and little if any wind. We will have some great snow walls this year on the Wild Sierra. Registrations are the best we have had for this young event but there still may be some walk in and register room. Can't wait. I 'll be doing the Wild Sierra Century route.

Thursday noon is the end of online registration. Best turnout yet but we will have some walk in spots left for Friday check in at Turtle Rock Park. One last ride up Ebbetts before the ride for me.

Great snow walls still on Ebbetts

Even down in Hermit Valley at 7000 ft.

Great views...Highland Peaks

.....and the weather is going to be perfect.
