Christmas Lights Ride Dec 23, Thur. evening from Irvine 6:00PM Start
Christmas Lights Ride, Dec. 23rd, Thursday Night (cancel if it's raining, but it's supposed to be dry):
6:00 PM start from the San Diego Creek Bike Trail, Culver and Barranca in Irvine (the parking lot by the abandoned Mervyn's store).
Meet at 5:45 PM for 6:00 PM start. Be sure you have head and tail-lights; other
Christmas lights on you or your bike are optional (but encouraged!).
We will follow what has been the Paul and Elise Haussler (for the past 10 years?), route to the backbay the Balboa Ferry and surrounding countryside. Approx. 30 mile route. Paul and Elise decided not to organize the ride this year, so we're doing it!
Optional Dinner at Islands in Irvine after the ride.
Invite your friends! Open to OC Rebels, Orange Country Wheelmen, Santiago Cycle
riders and Bicycle Club of Irvine riders and anyone else who would like to ride along. Tell your cycling friends!
Route sheets will be provided by Rosanne (our favorite Action Figure).

No worries **********, Except for the real rain-riders, we've all (SoCal riders) been off the bike for 5+ days!
The pace set by the leaders will be 14-16 mph. That said, there will be faster and maybe slower riders. Everyone gets a route sheet, but it's impossible to "police/regulate" everyone's speed.
Rosanne, Lou Ann and I (and maybe Chuck, though he's lots faster), will be at the 14-16 pace, but your speed may vary, and that's okay.
Best Regs,
Rick / OCRR

We've been doing this ride for 10 years and never had a problem, so hopefully our luck will continue.
If the water is still too high, we may not be able to use the bikeway for that reason, so may take an alternate route (and try to keep everyone together until we get back on the route sheet prescribed streets) around the bikeway.

Clubs should be setting an example of proper etiquette by advocating lawful routing on their rides.

...says the guy who puffs out his chest about being a "ninja" while riding at night with no lights on his bike. Thanks for the ethics lesson Jerome.

Talked to my softball buddy that is an Irvine Police Officer. He said he had no idea what I was talking about and they'd never stop anybody on the path for riding at night. Additionally, I rode my son to Barnes and Noble via the path at night with tons of lights and he loved it. There were two Irvine PD bike officers riding from the Irvine Marketplace back to their HQ on Harvard and they stopped us and GAVE MY SON AN IRVINE POLICE STICKER! So I'd say that law either doesn't exist or it's like those old funny laws like you can't talk to your horse at a stop sign.
Ride on!

The creek-level underpasses at Michelson & Campus are very muddy. I haven't been further north but the ones under Main & the double-dips are likely the same.
The dip by the Korean Church is about 8" or so under water due to the feed from the stream that runs through Mason Park. Mason Park is super-flooded so I think it will be a few days before that water level goes down.
The Back Bay had some big puddles on Sunday that I'm sure got worse over the last few days but I suspect it will dry out quite a bit by tomorrow night.
Might be best to take Harvard & University until you cross Campus and jump on the path over there. Have a great time if I don't see you. We'll need to do another GMR-GRR-Baldy ride soon.

Better yet, don't. The argument is moot as even if such a law exists, Irvine/Newport PD are not going to enforce it and even if they did it would be easy to defeat it in court. The information is not readily accessible by the public and there is nothing posted at any of the entrances or anywhere along the Multi-Use Path.

Then again, the only time I have been contacted by The Republic of Irvine PD it was for my Cateye TL-LD1100 "not being bright enough". As if blatantly trumped-up probable cause for contact was not enough, he unlawfully ordered me to ride on the sidewalk where there was a Class II bikeway. I didn't argue with him, but did take back to the Class II when he rolled out of sight.

Here's a fine hypothetical situation:
Joe ****er the lurker sees this ride posting and decides to attend because everyone is seemingly invited by these words, "and anyone else who would like to ride along." Joe ****er shows up, is riding along all safe and sane on the closed Class I bikeway and crashes after running over some storm detritus in the path. Well, the County is not responsible for Joe ****er's medical bills because as far as they are concerned, all Class I bikeways under their jurisdiction are closed when the accident occured. Who is Joe ****er to sue? I'd wager that Joe ****er might be able to go after the club(s) putting on the ride, or the OP.
