Biking in Cancun

(not sure if this is the right section to post this but)

We are travelling to Cancun in March and hoping to bike from Cancun to Playa del Carmen.

Are there any bike rental recommendations?
Whats the cost to ship our bike there and any recos for bike shipping places
Has anyone done this-can you please share your experiences?

Thank you

I don't know what a recos so I can't help you there. I was in the area a few months ago and found that it is not possible to rent decent bikes let alone, find one with an oiled chain and inflated tires. Do not ship your bike because it will cost you in duties and to take the bike with you is a joke. You may pay up to $400 round trip. Since the distance is not long, it is easier to jump on the $5 ADO bus from one city to the next and forget about the bike.

My recollection from being there 10 years ago is crazy drivers and bad roads with little or no shoulder. edit: I didn't do any riding there - my observations were from riding in taxis.

As for bringing your bike with you, it all depends on the carrier. For example, Virgin Atlantic allows you to bring a bike for free in addition to your regular baggage allowance. On the other hand, carriers like Delta charge upwards of $200 each way.

However, I don't remember the road from Cancun to Playa del Carmen being particularly bicycle friendly. And by road, I mean one singular road, as I believe there is only one direct road between the two cities. With that said, when I was there, I wasn't paying attention to how bicycle friendly the roads were, so take my recollection with a grain of salt.

Seems to me the violence has spread a bit to the cancun area over the last couple of years. In mid 2008 Our hotel which was on the far outskirts of town had armed guards at the gate. In town it's probably a little safer from violence, but much more dangerous from drivers. Anyway, many of the roads are horrible, and the drivers are a little less careful from what I could see.

If I were you I'd just workout in the gym at the hotel and take a break from the bike. It's a shame, because it'd be a beautiful place to ride.
