Continued..

Finally, up to the high point...and the clouds were really starting to take over:

Despite all that scary looking weather at the top, it never was all that cold. The whole ascent was done in a short sleeve jersey and normal bibshorts.

And thanks again KiddSisko for the inspiration. I do kind of wish I had been able to go up Saturday - mainly for some views at the top. Despite that, it was a great climb (although I still don't like Big Tujunga that much).

A few photos along the way...

News trucks, police, LA coroner, burnt out vehicle along Big Tujunga...

What happened?? Turns out it was filming for Law & Order Los Angeles.
I should've known it was a film shoot! It seemed strange that all those private security guards were keeping an eye on the police equipment.

I was kind of angry because I hate not reaching goals I set, but i didn't want to leave him behind. And I absolutely loved the views of the snowcapped mountains
The only wet section was along the 5 mile Red Box road, and I took it slow and easy. I didn't want all that water and grit soaking my backside! On the ride up I didn't meet many other cyclists, which surprised me given the weather. Just a few were heading down as I went up. But while I was going down Red Box (slowly), I must have passed over a dozen heading up. Serious (skinny) roadies on serious bikes. I can't imagine they crawled on the way down like I did.

Back on dry roads (ACH, AFH and Big Tujunga), it was between 30 and 40 the rest of the way.

Here's some more pictures from Saturday. Stopped at Clear Creek station for a meal, water refill and questions.

This one is on ACH, nearing the 5000 foot mark, a short distance from the Red Box turn off.

Just like the big city with all the parking signs!

More signage.

Not much of a view from the top that day. A bit hazy.

Outside the Observatory gate.

A look back from inside.

Dude!

OK, one more. Taken at the ACH and Red Box intersection, with Mt Baldy in the distance.

That's a really cool picture! And you're welcome!

So what is it about Big Tujunga that you don't like? I love it since they repaved it.

Big Tujunga is weird for me. I know a lot of people do like it (and some others don't), but I think it is a combination of a number of factors..
  • It just seems to go on and on (especially if you don't turn right on Angeles Forest)
  • Lots of rolling terrain instead of straight climbing (personal preference)
  • Climbs through valleys instead of along ridge lines or up mountains (again, personal preference)
  • Vegetation is still recovering (not the fault of this route, but unfortunate)
  • Higher speed traffic (although not really all that bad)
  • Summer is ridiculously hot on this road
  • I much prefer the scenery on most of the other roads in the San Gabriels

Most of it is psychological, but I've found that that matters a lot (at least to me) on the routes that I ride.

That said, Big T is still much better than riding in the city. I would just much prefer to ride on most of the other mountain roads in the area. I shouldn't complain. I'd probably long for a road like Big T in many areas of this country.
