So, I moved to Laguna Beach!
This place is amazing.
I went north (west rather) on the PCH this morning to Long Beach and back. A great time trial type of ride, esp. early in the morning.
Yesterday, I went to the Laguna Reserve behind my place and trail ran for several miles.
I am relieved to see that the food prices at Trader Joes are the same as in Tucson.
Okay, this place is great, nay sayers are soft? or crazy?
Q: it is illegal to talk on the cell phone and drive?
Thanks and I hope to meet up with some of you folks soon.

Drive yes, its illegal. But someone I know got caught on a bike and talking. He got out of it cause he said while driving and talking on the phone is illegal, it isn't on a bike cause he wasn't on a "motor" vehicle. So not sure if I want to chance it.
LB huh? You got $$$$. Got a sister?

I teach physics and no I am not anywhere near $$$. I live simply and have committed to using my money to pay rent for a great place to live. The outdoors will be my entertainment here and no eating out!

It's illegal to hold the phone up to your head and talk while you drive. It' snot illegal to use bluetooth or other hands free devices.
It's also illegal to text/email while driving, and the police can ask to see your call/email/text history if there is a question about whether you were or were not doing the thing in question at the time they caught you.

I typically make the light change by triggering the cross-walk button. It's a PITA, but its the only thing that works, short of just waiting for a car. You could just "run it" but I don't like doing that because 1) I don't want to get run over, and 2) I don't want to get a ticket. I see others "run it", but that's just not for me personally.
If there is no cross-walk button, I believe the rule on non-changing lights is a certain period of waiting and then proceeding when it is clear and safe. I don't know what the waiting period is.

Okay, thanks. I came across this situation a few times today. I left out on Laguna Canyon Rd. to El Toro Road. Followed that towards the Santa Ana's. I eventually worked my way to Jamboree and took that to Irvine Ave to Sand Canyon to Laguna Canyon. Some very beautiful areas and such diversity on a short ride. I'm diggin!

For light changes. Are you talking about left turn lanes? Irvine has done a pretty good job of adjusting their sensors so that bicycles can trip them. There are lights in a few other cities that also work but the majority of my left turns seem to be close to home. The "trick" is to ride through and stop on the sensor circle in a spot where both wheels are covering it at the same time. Not sure if that makes sense.
If the sensor does not trip, you can proceed with caution after a full cycle of the lights at that intersection. Basically, you can argue that the light is malfunctioning.

Next time you ride South on PCH, hang a right on the Santa Ana River Trail. It's about 28 miles of traffic free riding! If you're lucky, you'll get a "Beanz sighting" !!!

South? North right? (actually somewhat west from my local) I did come across that trail and wondered about it as I went towards Long Beach the other day on the PCH.

Yes, you're right. North - Great trail. The Santa Ana River is much longer and there are plans of connecting it with the upper Santa Ana River trail wich would make it about a 75 mile stretch from The beach to San Bernandino.

You have 3 river trail to ride: Los Angeles, San Gabriel, and Santa Ana. You have several local hiking areas, the Cleveland National Forest, the Santa Monica Mountains, the San Gabriel Mountains. Then in early July if you're into sailing, the Transpac will be held, Los Angeles to Honolulu. You get to see the boats docked in Newport weeks before the race.
