Last long training ride before Climb to Kaiser next Saturday (6/25). Since I was away last weekend and wasn't able to ride "Ride Around the Bear", I figured it was worth doing this weekend. I got to do the normal route, as Highway 330 re-opened yesterday (as opposed to taking 18, which is what they did this year). I also figured this would be good cardio training as 40-50 miles of the route is at 6k of elevation or higher. Did 330 for the first time. It's surprisingly a tough climb-- never super steep but 14+ miles of 6-8% grade that never lets up. The section on 18 to Big Bear Lake and around the northern side was beautiful. Climbing to Onyx Summit from the north side was similar to the south side (done in Breathless Agony) and not very difficult at all, except for the elevation (start at 6700, end at 8400). The normally fun descent down 38 toward Mentone wasn't so fun because of headwinds. Of the 5:54 riding time, I lost a good 3-5 minutes from two wrong turns (one near the start of 330, and another turning too early going around Big Bear Lake). Never really pushed very hard on this ride and my legs were a little tired and haven't fully been 100% since the Sierras trip two weeks ago. I'm going to take it easy until Climb to Kaiser next week and hopefully have a nice PR.

Not so good pic from north side of Big Bear Lake

Haha, thanks.

I went very early so it wasn't terrible. I know that a lot of people don't like climbing 330 because of the traffic, but I found it fine. Probably got passed by up 75 cars on the 15 mile climb to Running Springs which sounds like a lot but over 1hr40min not a big deal. The road is adequately curvy so the cars can't go fast either.
