Lauretta Fetta And Friends on GMR (7/13)
A nice day on GRM today. It was dark and cool, couldn't ask for more on a summer day riding GMR. Totally escaped the heat. Well other than trying to keep up with Lauretta Fetta. She and fellow OCRebel Doug did an excellent job climbing GMR. Of course LF said she was slow and I'd have to wait for her. Right after that she dropped the hammer and worked me on the climb. Doug was a good climber and flew right up to the shack. Hillbasher rode with us too. I'm sure he'd agree that today was one of the best days for riding GMR. HB and I did the descent together and like always, stopped for some posing.
From the very start Lauretta asked for the camera to take some pics. Next thing I know, she's going for the recorder and doing interviews ha ha! That's cool, I can't always think of something to say so it's nice to have some help. She has little camera fun at the shack then we're off to the village. But not without trying to talk me into riding to the ski lifts. Hm, I'm not prepared but I make a deal, I'll go if HB goes. The entire time heading to the village I'm hoping HB has second thoughts, luckily he does and saves my butt. But I tell LF that when I get into shape, I'll hit the lifts with her. She says cool but when we ride again she says my butt is hers on the lifts ha ha!
Well Doug and LF head off to the lifts. Doug's not sure if he has the gearing but willing to give it a try. HB and I kick back at the park for a while then as we're ready to head out, we see the two heading to the lodge. Doug's gearing isn't enough so they cut it short then go to the lodge for lunch instead. We think about staying but HB has to be back for some sleep before another night of work. Like always, we do some sight seeing on the return.
Cool ride but that Lauretta was hammering on GMR. She's gotten very strong. No, there was no waiting, I was working my butt off to keep up with her!
At the village we see a dude picking up his mail. He's got a little Min-Pin. Little Mr. Paws was ready for some action! Dog was about 6 inches tall but thought he was 6 feet tall ha ha! HB strikes up some puppy conversation with the owner only to find out the little sucker chased a 300 pound bear up a tree. Then the dude turns to me and asks if I'm Mr Beanz. Yup, that's me! Turns out to be Ray Clone, one of the Ridge Riders. We have some good cycling chat and a couple stories then we're off. Well, Ray was going to Disneyland, we were going back up GMR ha ha! Plus, today was the day Lauretta celebrated her first bee sting!
Few more pics in my blog.

Awesome, Beanz! Thanks for posting that!! I love it! What time you leaving for GMR on Saturday? Calamari and I are debating between AC and GMR. You're so humble on your posts, Beanz. (He's a way better climber than he lets on, everybody!.......He COULD'VE done the ski lifts) ;-)
Thanks for the compliment, Cervelo4Me.
You do a great job with your vids, Beanz.

Chrisssssssss, you're making me bluuuussssssssshhhh!
We're probably going to do Angeles Crest Saturday, Beanz. BUT! Rick and I were talking today and we want to invite you and Calamari on a Whittier Hills tour sometime! (That's Rick's turf). You'll get to ascend the road Descending (ouch) and climb Belle River (the only climb I have ever had to stop on because of it's steepness.....beFORE Rick and I changed my gearing). About 70 miles, 7,000 ft of climbing. It's mostly rollies, not a gradual climb like GMR. There's some 18% to prep you for the ski lifts, Beanz.

Oh, and Fred, did I tell you?! Chris surprised me with a new bike a few weeks ago! No more Costco bike for me! haha
He completely surprised me, too. Took me blindsided...just an ordinary day for riding and he just "needed to stop off at the bike shop for a bit" along our route where there was a frame in my size waiting there for me.

We already got Lauretta's old bike fitted by Eric of Velofit, and he recommended the ZW4 in Small as one of the possible bikes. After a few rides with Lauretta, watching how well she responded to the pro-fitting, it was only a matter of time before was going to spring the new bike on her.
Her birthday seemed a natural opportunity, (October 10, Happy Birthday in about half an hour baby!) but it was too far away. So I made the deposit back in August and payments thereafter.
I wanted to do something memorable and ironic to spring the new bike on her, but the best I could do was have it waiting at the shop (Revolution in Solana Beach) and just spring it on her. The Foo-fiends were little help when I asked in there, and some of them were absolutely wet-towels, saying it was a bad idea! (Buncha nerds. Never trust anything you read in Foo.)
I bought a bunch of glittery hearts at a craft store, (the kind 11 year old girls put on their Justin Beiber posters), but I decided that would have been a dead giveaway and would have ruined the shock value.
Lauretta was very surprised and embarrassed. She didn't know what to say and I felt a little bad for putting her on the spot.
But it was fun. And she looks a lot more at ease on the bike when we ride together. I parked her new bike next to my white Schwinn Peloton (an '86, made the same year my sweet Lauretta was born, exactly a quarter century ago tonight) in my bedroom and for a week or so, I'd fall asleep with a smile on my face, looking at the two beautiful white bikes leaning up against each other on my bedroom wall.
We haven't had enough opportunity to ride together as I would like, but it will come. The path to true love was never direct, smooth, or without obstacles, but all the best things in life deserve our best efforts and our patience.
Happy Birthday Lauretta. I love you, pretty baby!

Yes, It's a beautiful bike Lauretta! Can't wait till you're released to ride again! And yes, we will plan a Whittier Hills ride for Beanz, Chris and Genaro.
We'll include all your favorite bits (Descending and Belle River for sure), plus Turnbull and a few more brutal (but fun) climbs. Then we'll do the return with the Pathfinder climb and end with the descent of Brea Canyon. Sound good?
Rick / OCRR
PS: Note to Calamarichris: Don't work on Lauretta's bike(s) for her. Show her how, tell her how, but let her do the mechanicals. She's really good with that!

Hahahaha, you guys all crack me up. Genaro, it's your birthday in July....lol.
Rick, Chris and I just had a detailing party for our bikes like a week ago and he let me use that whatchamacallit tool that lets you take the cassette off. Right now I'm only trusted with doing work on my bike, and minimal work on Chris' bike. But we'll know my training is complete when he trusts me with both bikes.
Oh, and Rick, don't forget Belle River climb! (muahahahaha).
I can't believe you were all on this thread so fast. Sheesh, you must've had the instant subscriptions. I was on weekly.
Isn't Chris the sweetest? Look how he talks to me. I just love him to pieces. Oh, and Chris, LawnChair wants us to name our first born LawnChair. I didn't want to respond without first consulting you. https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...1#post13312512
25 today!

No worries Lauetta, Read my post again, Belle River is on there!
Oh, and Happy Birthday too! Wow, 25 . . . I can't even remember when I was 25! That was back in the old days when we all used downtube shifters and toe-clips and straps . . . long time ago!

Happy Birthday Lauretta. I love you, pretty baby!
