Good shop in Santa Monica/W. LA area

Coming to LAX at the end of the month to drop wife off for a conference, which leaves me with 6 hours to kill. Going to be hitting my old haunts and hanging with my brother. Trying to get my brother to get involved with bicycling and doing road races and crits and stuff, so want to show him some bikes and see if he gets interested.

Any GOOD shops in the Santa Monica/W. LA area?

I've been in Bike Effect on Broadway in Santa Monica. Seems like a pretty cool shop. Small, but the guy I talked to was really willing to be helpful and also just talk cool bikes.

Hoping to find a race oriented shop with lots of cool bikes to look at so I can explain what everything is to my brother. He wants to join a track club and go sprinting and I told him he would have an easier time on his joints doing a bike, but he said he'd only be interested if I was riding with him, and I live 400 miles away.

I haven't been yet, but some folks recommended Wheel World over on Sepulveda and Washington as good one to go to.

Funny story: When I worked for a Home Depot in Woodland Hills (north Los Angeles) a truck driver called and asked for directions. After listing our nearest freeways, only the 101 sounded familiar to him. Turns out his dispatcher had scheduled him for 12 noon in Sacramento and 12:30 at our store, thinking it was Woodland and not Woodland Hills.

Anyway, definitely check out Helens. Not my favorite shop, but they are truly race oriented.

Any list of race oriented shops must include Cynergy.

Helens is very active, and Veloworx is just way cool in a very up-to-date, but still old-school kind of way.

Plenty of tri stores, do they count?

I second bike effect. They have a really cool setup and experts in bike fitting and racing. Plus, you can scare your brother off with the price of the rapha clothing they have in stock. Cynergy on the other hand has a larger stock, but more wider range of stuff where bike effect is more focused on performance cycling. Both stores are very good and relatively near each other. Check out their pages on facebook to get a sense of what the shop's personalities are like.
