Ride Nicknames?
I am relatively new to this forum. Just recently I rode with a group on a route that after about 20 miles climbs up Little Tujunga Canyon Rd to a place called Camp Nine. They nicknamed the ride the "Rodney King" because it beats you to near death. My morbid sense of humor thought that was sorta funny.
Question(s) for you gals/guys: What is your favorite ride nicknamed? Why so named? Can you provide the route? Thanks! |
My name for it: Why the F*#% did I go this way?
Route: PCH ->Newport Coast -> Right on Bonita Canyon-> Shady Canyon Bike Trail -> Shady Canyon Road -> Right on Quail Hill -> Right on Laguna Canyon -> Back to PCH Name this way: because I loved the views, but hated the climbing :p |

I just name mine after the roads/trails I am on for that route with a distance.
|
Most of the San Fernando Valley Bicycle Club's rides have creative names. Other than that and other organized rides (such as the Montrose Ride or the Donut Ride), I just know names of climbs like Rock Store (Mulholland heading up to Kanan) and 8 Minute Hill.
|
My nicknames are even less politically correct than the OP's.
|
I have to mention "Damnation Alley". Oak Glen is steep but not bad, and neither is the climb to Onyx Summit via Angelus Oaks...but Mill Creek Rd as "Damnation Alley" you got that right!:o
Only 6 miles long, 4, 5, 6 then a tad of 7% but this is the hardest part of Breathelss Agony IMO. :D |

I like some of the MTB ones around here. (more trail names than ride names)
One is called the Buffalo because that's what the GPS track looks like. The Luge because that's what the trail feels like going down. Some of the more famous road rides include Como St, and I don't think that actual street exists anymore - but the ride does. |
Bed of thorns, Whitter narrows dam to Shoreline Village and back. Dry weather, goat heads blown onto the trail. Talked to one group from Montebello sunday who had 7 flats. I am just able to ride again after 8 weeks, so i am on my Park Pre Hammer mountain bike with big knobby tires and thorn shield. Pulled a few goat heads out of my front wheel. Any other bike i would run out of tubes.

Were is "Buffalo" and "The Luge"? I know about the Como St route, well sort of. Thanks Rumpled.

Not SoCal, but Oakmont Blvd. here climbs a pretty steep hill I like to call The Oakmonster.
|
Some co-workers and I call our Thursday morning
commute from the San Fernando Valley to USC, the "no excuses, take no prisoners" ride. Of course, we're lucky to all ride in, (and back), together at least once a month!! |
I refer to mine as the long ride, the short ride, the loop. My brother and I call our Saturday ride the Saturday ride.

I always thought it was called this because of how hot it gets there.

[QUOTE=LAriverRat;13318485]West side of Whittier Narrows Dam is just south of San Gabriel BLvd on Lincoln Rd. Parking lot on top, ride down to Rio Hondo river bed go south to Los Angeles River Bed ......
That would mean you would take the "Marano Beach" route to "Bed of Thorns" route. Marano Beach is upper Rio Hondo (Between Garvey & Lincoln). It is called Marano because...... |

Here's the Buffalo MTB route http://www.geoladders.com/show_route.php?route=9040 Here's the Luge. It's actually Santiago Truck Trail (which OC just agreed to buy part of today, yeah!) and the Luge is the downhill - with some streets to connect the two via Cook's Corner. http://www.geoladders.com/show_route.php?route=1 and, here's Como - the shorter version http://www.geoladders.com/show_route.php?route=43904 for another name - the Seven Sisters (road ride) http://www.geoladders.com/show_route.php?route=488 |

No Rest For The Wicked - a 35 mile conglomeration of MTB trails in the Grand Mesa National Forest, mostly above 10,000ft MSL

And yes, it is often quite hot with no cooling breeze. Rick / OCRR |
