Thurs GMR fun 12/29

Been sick but figured I'd give GMR a try to play with the Garmin on a climb. Legs not bad, breathing ok once I warmed up but neck and head were hurting, darn illness. Well it did give Hillbasher a chance to launch the Bianchi he built up from scratch. A collection of parts he gathered but looking real nice!

No meaning in the song, just a tune I like.

Hey Beanz,

U guys like rockin' the triples for GMR?

It has been a few years since I've ridden my geared roadbike which has a compact. Mostly SS on the road with mild climbing, and a bunch of mtb riding. Thinking I want to do some extended road climbing this year...

Mine has carried over from the original purchase of my lemond. I bought it as a triple as I had a double on my Cannondale. I ride the triple to preserve the DA stuff and this bike was originally purchased as a "beater bike".

I just can't see spending a few hundred dollars to convert when either will do, standard double or triple.

What do you mean by "preserve the DA stuff"? Does it "wear out"? I've been using mine heavily.

I've worn out Ultegra shifters, and rim braking surfaces eventhough I know many others that haven't.

The biggest tip I have ever offered is to know it gets better after the first 2 or 3 miles. Your body wants to shut down early but if you give it a chance to warm up and find a rhythm, it seems easier in the later miles to the shack. Don't panic, many newbs will think they are done at the 3 mile mark and turn back. Once down, they slap their foreheads and say, " I coulda done more"..

How do you tell the grade, how steep is doing GMR? Like for reference, what is the grade for like that steep climb coming back on SGRT at the Santa Fe recreation area dam?

If you map out a .7 section of trail on the dam climb, it shows 10%. GMR is 6% average which means some less and some more. Very short sections of 10% here and there, maybe 10 yards long.

The dam imo is steeeper and harder to climb. As mentioned before, the body does not have a chance to find a groove on the short dam climb so it's tough. On GMR, not as steep and you are on it long enough to get your groove on which makes it more tolerable.

Newbs really should give GMR a try. For one thing if you get 3 or 4 miles up and "really" can't handle any more, it's an easy return, all downhill so you never are stranded.

Believe me, if Gina can do the shack ( and has 15 times or so), most riders can do it. It's all about getting over the fear of the evil stories that have developed over the years.

It's getting out there to do it. Just about every rider I have taken up has mentioned it was much more doable than they thought. Like I said, Gina has done it many times now but still, there are those that tell tall tales on the forums of doing monster climbs in past lives but still show fear of the EVIL GMR.

FTR, there is a section in my last video where I tell Gina and Alyce that the grade is 9 and 10%...that is for a very short section. I have no problem doing this section but the dam makes me cringe.

1:40 into the video..it is about 1 mile short of the shack (7 miles up)

All I see is a picture of you and your truck. No pics of the shack, or the wall at the top, or the view from Newman's Point, or the first saddle. Where's the video you have become so famous for? I remember you haveing said numerous times, " No pictures? Then it didn't happen." LOL

Ah, before I had a Garmin so I wil rephrase my statement:

"No pictures, no Garmin stats, it didn't happen".

and a pic of the stats

It's always open to cars. But not many travel the road as taking Baldy is easier, faster and much shorter for vehicular traffic. There are a few on weekends (5 or 6 and a few crothc rockets), very few on weekdays (3 or 4 and soem crotch rockets).

I went Sunday afternoon, saw about 3 cars, mostly photographers and sight see ers. About 10 motorcycles. But there are so many cyclists up there nowadays that traffic is aware that several cyclsts are present.

Sorry Fred. Once again, all I see are numbers and a few squigly lines. No route description or even a date. Need pictures, or it never happened.

No one poses better than Mr. Beanz
Do you have an adventure pass to park there?

No, look at my ride stats on the Garmin site, I was only stopped for 15 seconds. ..... 1:47:45 ride time VS 1:48:00 elapsed time.

I parked, posed, and was gone before the authority man could blink his eyes. No adventure pass required.
