Looking for a carpool for Death Valley Spring Double this Friday (3/2)

Anyone leaving Friday after work? Out of P.T.O days so I have to leave after work. Willing to chip in for gas, junk food, bike tuneups, and general comedy.

Sorry I can't offer you a ride. I'm riding my motorbike out there Friday night to be a course marshall. I've ridden 4 AdventureCorps events and figured it's about time I volunteer at one.
I'll be the goofy blond guy in the yellow jumpsuit & helmet on the amber-colored crotch rocket with food, tubes, tires, tools, water & first aid kit roving the course. See you out there! :)

Anybody else going to DV this weekend?

That's a SWEEEEEET ride!!!!

Thanks Homie.
It's 10 years old now, but still doesn't burn a drop of oil and still gets 40-48mpg. (I even cartwheeled it into the weeds once and woke in the hospital--take a lickin' and keeps on tickin'!)

Maybe I'll see ya out there Chris. Will be great for me to get outta town for a day or two and get back to one of my favorite spots, Death Valley.

I should be pretty easy to spot. :)

CalamariChris, thanks for volunteering. How late were you out on the roads?

Triplebutted, did you make it out here? How was your ride?

calamarichris 03-04-12 03:38 PM

It was my pleasure, JMX and you are most welcome!
I was the motorcade escort to the final finisher just before 1100. It was a real gas, especially helping the people who'd run out of water, calories, salt, and the Advil was flowing freely just before the sun went down.
It was particularly awesome to finally see one of these events from the volunteer's perspective.
I ran into TripleB at the start line, and saw him a few times out on the course. Also ran into some other people who recognized my suit, but I've been pretty groggy since 9:00 last night. (Can't wait to go back to work tomorrow and rest!)
Congratulations on your awesome finish JMX and I'll see you out there again I'm sure. :thumb:

I did so much better than I expected. I did spend about 15 miles in a pace line (which I feel a *little* lame about, but the temptation is strong out there), but the other 180 was solo or I was pulling a pace line.

Chris, thanks for that water bottle handoff rolling into bad water. I felt so pro getting a bottle from a support motorcycle. :D

PS. that was me in the Corvette that gave you the thumbs up out on the highway as we headed into Baker.

Do you take off one wheel and put the bike in the hatch, or do you have an external rack?

I take off both wheels and everything then fits quite nicely in the hatch. Got 27mpg on the trip too.

http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=240046Chris ROCKED!!! Thank you thank you for the support. It felt so good knowing we were in good hands out there. JMX, I drove my Camaro out there. I have the SeaSucker rack but didn't put it on this weekend.

Thanks for the compliment TripleB, and you are very welcome too.
It really was a neat day and an even better perspective to see it from. When you ride the event, you probably see a few dozen other riders who are close to your pace during the day. When you volunteer at an aid station, you get to see hundreds of tired riders come by. But I ended up motorcycling either 450 or 480 miles on Saturday and saw everyone several times in various states of exertion, fatigue, and happiness, as well as the beautiful course. I really love the culture of these AdventureCorps events.

Jmx: I don't think you should feel at all lame about riding in a paceline. It's not the Death Valley Fall Time-Trial! And I didn't recognize you in the Vette. (Should have remembered from the GMR ride.) That was a good morning and a good road to maintain the legal speed limit. ;) I only got 42mpg on the way home, but that motorcycle luggage acts like a parachute.

Can't wait for Hell's Gate!
