SIKAD 2012 ride report -- I had a blast!

I had a great time at the SIKAD ride today, riding the 44-mile course from Yorba Park to Huntington Beach and back on the SART trail.

I'm not sure how many riders participated; several hundred I'm sure.

Everything went like clockwork; pre-race registration and bib pickup, the ride, the SAG stops and the luncheon back at Yorba park afterwards.

The food was great, and quite plentiful. Eggs etc at the Edna Park SAG stop, PBJ and fruit, etc at the turn-around at Huntington Beach, and a phenomenal Roast Pig BBQ back at Yorba park. These folks really put on a good show.

I did a couple organized rides many years ago, and most of them were marred by a few undisciplined riders that made things difficult for everyone else. I was pleasantly surprised that I didn't see any of that on the SIKAD ride; everybody was acting like adults and nobody seemed to be creating trouble.

I was by myself, and I was pleased that quite a few other riders and volunteers made a point to come over to me and chat. So it was a very pleasant and friendly bunch of folks.

I hadn't ridden the SART before; I was quite impressed. It was wide, the pavement was in great condition, and it was pleasantly clean. You folks in the OC have a great resource there and I can see why so many of you ride it so often.

A special thanks to Mr. Beanz for posting his videos of the SART folks; I never would have heard about the ride otherwise.

See y'all out there next year at SIKAD 2013.

It is a nice trail! The riders on Sikad sure are good people aren't they? All nice and well behaved, the stops are great!

Bah, they were all riding the WRONG WAY!

I kid. From a non-involved cyclist perspective they were pretty low overhead on SART. No road hogging or bad habits on display whatsoever. It looks like it would have been a lot of fun.

I'm glad to hear that from somebody not involved, and especially someone going the other way.

I was pleasantly surprised at how well-behaved everybody was. Eons ago (1990's) I did a few organized rides, and there always seemed to be a handfull of folks that messed things up for everybody; in particular a teen-ager that was bent on making a good time sprinted through a crowd of folks on a narrow bike path... which resulted in a big crash and at least one women taken to the hospital in an ambulance.

The resulting lawsuit ended that ride forever. (Kangaroo Baggs tour in Ventura, CA).

And even when people aren't hurt, a few "road hogs" as you describe can really make a mess.

Everybody I saw at the SIKAD ride were really fun to be around, both the kids and the adults.

Several folks, both organizers and fellow-riders approached me at the SAG stops and at the luncheon afterwards just to chat (I was there by myself) which I very much appreciated... Often rides like this feel clique-ish to an outworlder like me but these folks went out of there way to be friendly and inclusive.

I'll be back next year, and I can't recommend it highly enough. Especially to folks with Significant Others or children that would like to join in the fun. The SART trail and the SIKAD hospitality are really a good match. <and there is a more-challenging Santiago Canyon route for the more powerful riders, too)
