Sound Off for Breathless Agony!

Who else will be there?
I didn't get pizza after l'Etape, but I'm definitely getting some after this ride! Anyone else up for recovery pie afterward?
Be there in my usual La Vie Claire Mondrian, but probably riding a flat-black Felt, on account of the Oak Glen ugliness.

Pie, but what about the fresh burritos at the finish? I will be in a black Cannondale kit with a silver cannondale. Bored will be in a black kit as well?

fishymamba 05-02-12 02:25 PM

I'll be there! I will be riding a white/black Cannondale CAAD9....and I am probably going to be the only kid there I think.

bored117 05-02-12 02:50 PM

Yup Black/white Scott Addict and Black/white Sugoi. Cat like whisper helmet... (didn't see too many last time).
Probably only one out of how many hundred of people with Topeak Dynapack DX (or Dynapack)

So we just check in minutes before the event right? No packet pickup earlier in the week.

It looks like its "safe'ish" to take a pain killer (vicodin) and still do intense exercise, so it makes me a bit more likely to go on Saturday. I hate taking pills, but week is one of those times I'm glad they are there.

If I make it, I'll be the skinny guy *****ing about his back pain on this (now without aerobars):

Did we ever get a route sheet? (or is it same all the time leaving off of Sylvan to redlands?)

Rick@OCRR 05-02-12 03:58 PM

bored117,

You will get a route sheet at the start (Sylvan Park in Redlands). After the 2nd checkpoint you don't really need one, just go UP. Well, until Onyx that is, then you just go DOWN (okay, there's one good climb and some small ones on the way down).

I'll be working registration at Sylvan Park and after that I'll be driving SAG. At Reg. I'll probably be wearing my Planet Ultra Cap and wearing my Kryptonite Locks black jacket. Out on the road I'll be driving my wife's Subaru Forester station wagon (dark blue) with "Bike 1" license plates and Yakima roof rack.

Due to space restrictions, will probably not SAG Jack Rabbit Trail or the dirt part of Oak Glenn.

Hey now, wouldn't you consider this a PED ;)? You can go well beyond your normal pain threshold while riding on Vicodin.

BTW, I've done this before and had a great time. Of course I wasn't climbing up a mountain at the time.

Meh, the blood transfusion I'm doing Saturday before the event should mask the vicodin. :D

I've actually not taken any yet, but I have them with me now just in case. When you took them, did you feel drunk? Safety is really my main concern, I'd rather not do the event than be "drunk" cycling down a mountain at 45mph. Hopefully this all clears up by Saturday and its a non-issue.

I'll be there! Riding a white Giant TCR ISP with red bar tape and seat. Haven't thought enough about jersey choice, but likely will be a white with red and black H&S Bikes -- Burbank jersey. I'm planning on riding this the way I rode Mulholland Challenege-- slow and steady, and spending >80% of my time in Zone 2 and 3. So say hi when you pass me.

Chris, maybe I'll see you out there. We met at the Death Valley spring century, I think my riding partner was eating your pizza in the bar the night before.

I'll be there with my old 1996 Lemond. Its painted to look like a piece of patio furniture.

@JmX: It turned my ride into a chilled-out, floaty, sort of pleasant ride. It wasn't a drunk-effect. YMMV. Personally, I wouldn't do it by choice on BA either.

They have tighter cutoff times than Mulholland. If you leave at 6:30, you have 9 hours to get to the top of Onyx before they close shop. At the same time, you can't leave much earlier than that, because the first checkpoint does not open till 8:00.

I'll try to leave at 6 if I get there in time.

I'll be the not-very-skinny guy heading up the rear on my trusty Litespeed.

^I think I saw that bike on MC?

But you are also only riding like 85 miles to the top then it is free riding down.

Vicodin is a schedule 2 narcotic and contains hydrocodone (an opiate). The label says stuff like "do not operate heavy machinery" etc. Obviously, people respond differently to different drugs so for you - I wouldn't recommend taking it for the FIRST time and then trying a stressful ride like that.

I don't recall feeling dopy while taking vicodin but I've only ever taken it after surgery and it was specifically to fight extreme, debilitating pain, so dopiness was the least of my concerns. Muscle relaxers, on the other hand, induce a decided amount of sleepiness (not sure if that's in your regimen for your back) so I would definitely skip those. If you were a hollywood starlet, I'd say pop 4 vicodins and hit the road. Since you're not, I'd try it out first.

I'll be there - Black Felt/probably yellow and black kit - or possibly riding inside a Subaru Forester wagon... I'm packing two tubes and a patch kit, after that it's time for a cold beer if I flat out.

I'll keep an eye out for the Amish brothers then. :D

Not just pie, man--pizza pie!

Vicodin affects everyone differently. I just fall asleep on the stuff and have bizarre nightmares--rather endure searing pain, thanks. Too bad Onyx only goes up to 8K feet--nothing beats the high of 11+k's oxygen dearth. Your lips and fingernails turn blue from lack of oxygen, granite boulders tingle warmly when you touch them, and everything is profoundly hilarious.

If you think the altitude might be a problem, bring an aspirin. Aspirin & hydration is a pretty good instant cure for altitude sickness. :thumb:

Note that the Forester wagon will be equipped with spare tubes of various PV lengths and a floor pump to get you back out on the road! I'll also have a couple of tires if anyone slices one really bad!

Update from BA SAG Central, I will not be Sagging JRT but I will be Sagging the dirt section of Oak Glenn . . . just FYI.

Great to have friendly hand available at what I would imagine could be the most difficult part of BA... It rained on me on Tustin 2 Irvine leg when I was commuting today morning. I hope low desert area isn't having this strange *unforcasted* rains... Doesn't help that sun isn't really breaking out as of late. (I do live about 20 miles away from it and can't say weather in Riverside has been the greatest...)

Lesper4 05-03-12 12:03 PM

Channel 11 said brezzy on Saturday for the IE.

It was great weather for the workers ride. Hot on Damnation Alley, but fine everywhere else.

I would be the one in the OCRR jersey.

So is this years course exactly the same as 2011? If so I'm gonna download this to the garmin so I know where to turn

melgarpoe 05-03-12 05:51 PM

Getting ready for my first Breathless Agony. I've done the Death Ride and Heartbreak Century, but this is my first time on Breathless. Looking forward to it, sort of. Been doing doubles this year, but not a ton of climbing, so I'm not sure how much of a sufferfest this will be, but I guess, one way or another, I'll know in about 48 hours!

Lesper4 05-03-12 06:01 PM

I would be intrested to knwwo how one fares with lots of doubles under their belt compared to lots of elevation?

I would think the route will be the same, about the only thing they can change is the first 3 miles?
