Bicycling On Ted Williams Parkway?
 

Hey guys, should be a easy question. I am flying out there this summer and will be staying right off the parkway (chestnut hill) and wanted to ride the 12 miles or so to Del Mar, then take the PCH up and down the coast. Is riding allowed on the parkway? From google earth, I can see a bike path but only until Ted Williams crosses with 15. Any help would be great, thanks a lot!

Yes, there are bike lanes both ways on Ted Williams.

Yep! It's a great route.

You can ride on the bike lane/shoulder of 56 east of Sabre Springs Road. West of Sabre Springs there is a bike path on the south side of 56 as it crosses over I-15. Beware of traffice entering and exiting I-15 at the stoplights. The lights work fine, it's just that the motorists arent always attentive. After crossing I-15 the path will dump you off on Azuaga Street for a little less than a mile. At the light at Rancho Penasquitos Blvd, look for the path to continue on the south side of 56. Take the path to El Camino Real (you'll need to climb a little dirt strip of about 50 feet to get to El Camino Real). Turn north (right) on El Camino Real. Go for about a quarter-mile, cross under 56 and make a left on Carmel Valley Road. This will take you to PCH.

+1. Couldn't have said it better or agree more. If this is a ride you are going to do more than once there are some more creative (and IMHO more scenic) ways to get out to the coast, like heading up North a little and taking Del Dios West and then through Ranch Santa Fe to the coast. The only part I would change is I go Under El Camino Real and catch it on the other side I have two ways from there. Rote one would be the sidewalk to the opposite side and to the light a quarter mile away and a left turn. I do this to avoid the merging traffic going for the Five Option two ads more time and scenery I go south on El Camino Real and turn right on Carmel Mtn and right again on Sorrento Valley rd which dead ends and turns in to a bike path along the wetlands then left on Carmel Valley to the coast

I might escort you along when you get here as well I live right next to the 56 bike path at PQ Blvd and am often riding this route

Google Map It, most of the roads out of there are bike friendly, as long as you are a safe rider. I googled "Chestnut Hill" it looks to be in the Carmel Mnt/Sabre Springs area (fancy names for the development of the area between Poway and Skinurpeenus), my route suggestion would be to head slightly north to Camino Del Norte, take that west through 4S ranch, it will turn into Camino Del Sur. Turn right on San Dieguito road, right on El Apajo to Via De Santa Fe up into the heart of Rancho Santa Fe, then Linea Del Cielo west until it turns into Lomas Santa Fe all the way to PCH in Solana Beach. North or South from there your choice. South takes you through Solana Beach and Del Mar you can pick up Carmel Valley road back east to the 56 bike trail for a nice loop or continue south to take on either the Torrey Pine Grade or Park Road, once at the top then loop back to Carmel Valley and back to Poway/Penasquitos area.

or, up in Rancho Santa Fe head east along Del Dios and loop back through Harmony Grove ( I know the way, just not the actual street names off hand) and back to the coast along La Costa Avenue than back south along PCH through Encinitas/Sol Bch/Del Mar and back east as mentioned above. If you are up for that route than you will have experienced the San Diego North County Coastal Biking Nirvana.
