I hope this turns out to be one of the few stories with a happy ending.

Wow. Hope the owner steps forward. Reading the Craiglist ad ... "proof of ownership will be required". Hmmm ... can I get my hands on, or even have 'proof of ownership' for any of my bikes? Maybe I should put a paper with my name and address under the handlebar tape next time I wrap the bars ... or slip the paper into the bottom bracket or seat post?

I'm sure we all have pictures of our babies floating around... You may also wish to take a picture of the serial number plate with your cell phone and stash a copy somewhere on your computer. I don't know how rigorous the proof substantiation would have to be but I imagine anything is better than "yep, that's mine"
