Where are you riding this weekend ? 09/01-02

Chris, I hope I got this in on time!!!

I'm doing a 122 mile Gran Fondo in Vegas on 9/22 so I've planned all my weekend rides till then. This weekend, my calendar says I'm riding from my home in Fontana to the Base of GMR, up GMR/GRR, down Baldy and back home. Approx 80 miles

Next week I'm going to reverse the route, up Baldy, down GMR

Week after than I'm doing a 120 mile ride from Fontana to Huntington Beach via SART, then back up SGRT and back home.

Airp! Good work, Leatherneck!
I'm stuck puppysitting a neurotic beagle who scratches the h311 out of my door if I take something out to the trash, so I'm going to be riding in the Alps and Pyrenees with a bunch of doping TdF celebrities. (i.e. rollers)

I'm gonna go with []. Yikes! Full ride report when you're done please.

I'm going to feel like a total pansy dawdling my way up to the village Saturday.

I'll have to do something Sunday and/or Monday but I have no idea what, and it's going to compete with my very intense urge to fire up the smoker on one or both days. Bad things happen when i tell my wife to just add a handful of coals to the firebox once an hour.

1 Felt + 2 Pelotons + Photoshop = perfectly replicated seat-to-bb position.

Here is my plan if all goes well.
Saturday: Lytle Creek and maybe some extra (30 milles) I am tempted to ride with you Genaro but it is supposed to be a hot weekend.
Monday: Marshall Canyon and hopefully Blue Ridge in Wrightwood (35 miles)

Genaro, what is your route SGRT to Fontana? Specifically SGRT to GMR? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

yeah, pretty much the section that Lesper has on the map there. You can cut up Glendora Blvd and hang a right on Sierra Madre to the base of GMR.

Sweet. It will be a long day, but starting out early should help a lot.

I think I'll ride GMR/GRR to the Village and perhaps the ski lifts

Hmmm ... I'm not sure who you are, but I don't think so.

That climb up the backside of GMR should be OK, so long as the heat behaves itself. I actually prefer heading back to Encanto that way than heading straight down West Fork. And it ain't just the headwind. Several months ago, I had a motorist flip his car about 50 yards in front of me going into that last turn. Yikes.

If you are the author of that ridewithgps route, rode to Dawson Saddle on Sunday and drive a red prius (iirc), then I met you at Encanto, chatted again at Dawson and shared a table with you at Cystal Lake.

For those doing GMR, keep an eye out for the Clyde/Athena "Village Virgin" ride. It looks like there will be about 11 of us starting at 8am. Wave as you pass us all!

Alright I guess I'm gonna have to do crystal lake (maybe on monday?), with all this talk about it.

My only concern is if labor day one of those days where people drive around drunk all day.

Just get an early start. If you start in the 6's or early 7's, you'll be past the the OHV/West Fork/Cogswell Dam area about an hour after you pass the Ranger Station at the mouth of the canyon and before the crowds hit that area. After that area, you may only have a car or two pass you the rest of the way.

Be careful descending through the West Fork area on the return. People can't hear you on a bike and if they see you they don't understand that you could travelling 35mph through there. An early start will also minimize the traffic passing you on the way out of the lower canyon (after the East Fork Bridge), because many people are still heading into the canyon and the ones already there stay all day.

Encanto Park in Duarte and Pioneer Park in Azusa are both good places to start. I prefer Encanto because the MUP is a nice warm up before the climbing begins in earnest.

I have heard that there is now water available at Coldbrook Campground (just past mile marker 32.12) from a spigot about 50yds in from the road, but I have not verified this.

FYI the turn-off from Hwy. 39 to go up to Crystal Lake is just past mile 38.

I rode up 39 on July 4th. I started around 6:15 and traffic was light to West Fork and non-existent above. By the time I came down though, the West Fork area was packed; people didn't always look both ways before crossing in front of me, but it wasn't too bad. The ride out of the lower canyon also had very light traffic. I'd join you, but I've ridden it 3 weeks in a row and need to ride somewhere else.

I know who that is, but it's not me.

The GMR/GRR to the lifts has it all. A climb that always kicks my arse, and a good meal at the Baldy Lodge.
