Buying New vs. Used
A recent thread reenforces my choice of never buying anything used in this world.I have no time nor the personality for the hassles of used anything purchases.I'm sure many of you never had problems with used bike purchases but with my luck, it will go wrong. Also, there is nothing like that feeling of brand new and the pride it gives me to work hard for brand new.The brand new paint, the brand new components and the full warranty are worth every penny to me.I don't want someone else s undisclosed problems. The feeling of knowing its brand new with a sport with the dangers of road biking give me peace of mind that i cant put a dollar figure on.How many countless times in our lives have we all heard horror stories post a used bike or even a used car purchase?Life is too short, I hate self inflicted hassles and dramas.Takes me a long time to save up for my carbon but it was well worth it.My motto for myself only is buy used, get abused. There is one exception i suppose, and that would be buying friend who you know for sure took great care of the bike, but that is a rare event. For me only ,id rather just do without and buy new when i can afford it.Okay im rambling and my post is now a total bore.Peace all.

I concur sort of, but I also consider everyone in the C&V forum to be my friend.
(God bless Jan Nikolajsen for selling me my beloved Look frame.) May I spend the rest of eternity eating six-inch turds if I ever rip off one of my C&V bretheren.

The original thread was closed for a reason. Feel free to discuss the topic of new vs. used, however, this is not going to be "Bicycle John's Fail - Part 2" or "Bash the OP". Thanks.

I bought this Bianchi used without the wheelset that is on there for the pic. Had no problems paid CL Los Angles price but it was a good bike to me and was bummed I had to sell it. That being said I would never by a used carbon bike or carbon wheels from anyone.

I've sold a lot of bike stuff over the years and I consider it a win-win. Often times stuff is just too nice to throw away and someone else can enjoy it for pennies on the dollar.
Many times, people sell bikes because they want to upgrade or try something new or they just collect so much stuff, they just want it to go to a good home.
For the smart shopper, it can be a big money saver.

If you're reasonably sure that you know what you want, and plan to keep the bike for a while, I have no problem buying new. Especially when it comes to carbon fiber road bikes. When I was just starting out in cycling though I bought two new hybrids and sold them for a 50% loss within a year. I wished I had bought them used.

Understood and will comply, but why didn't you shut it down a few pages earlier, when it was plainly an unjust character assassination campaign against an LBS?

I've done both.
Bought the Guru new, bought the Masi used.
Bought the Mercian new, got the Hercules used.
Bought the GT 853 new, got the GT Ti used.
Bought the DaHon folder new.
Kind of got the Zaskar new (frame) but installed used components.
So that's four new, three used and one (kind of) both.
Either way works if you know what you want and you know what to look for.

I am a strong believer in buying and riding what you like. I may not want it for me, but that should be, and I hope is, irrelevent to you. The OP says that the equivalent of "new car smell" for bikes, the warranties and the lack of the possibility of previous abuse issues makes buying new worth every penny for him. Good for him for knowing what his priorities are and for being guided by them. I hope he gets as much pleasure from his purchases of new stuff as I have from my purchases of used stuff. It's all good.

I'd have no problems buying a used bike. They seem like they're pretty darn simple machines, and a quick inspection will have you 99% covered while you only pay 40% of the cost (and no tax). The only real hassle is the price haggling and having to meet up with random strangers who you hope aren't dealing in stolen goods.

I've purchased a used Carbon Fiber road bike and two used aluminum mountain bikes - one full suspension and one a hardtail - I spent less than 50% of the new price for each of them
I've had the road bike for five years and ridden over 10,000 miles with not a problem
I road the hard tail for six years with not a problem until it was stolen while locked up at a transit center
I've had the FS mountain bike for 9 months and a lot of hard miles with not a problem
I sold an aluminum road bike for 1/2 of what the Campagnolo components cost me - the new owner had had the bike for two years and a lot of very hard miles and is still writing me to tell me how much he loves the bike I sold him.
Used Bikes are a great deal

I've purchased 16+ bikes in the last 5 years. 5 new, the rest used. The new were all heavily discounted so were not much more than similar bikes were selling for used. The used ones were anywhere from decent deals to screaming deals. Have yet to have a serious issue with a purchase, new or used.

I'm glad that there are lots of people who favor buying new for the reasons cited by the OP. Without them there would be no replenishment of the used bike market with the bargain prices that are common now.

There's lots of good deals on used things, bikes included. A few years back a girl I know bought a $500 bike for her boyfriend. He sold it without ever sitting on it for $100 within a week.
