Idea from another thread. We've visited bike shops before after rides and have had employess we don't know, never met, walk out and admire Gina's old bike. We were told it was an 84 when we bought it, somebody on the forum mentioned they thought it was an 88.

$40 bike with some super sale upgrades. Like 105 calipers I found on sale for $29. Hacked them on myself so I saved a bundle on labor.

Gina loves the bike and though riding full carbon, won't let the bike go!

I know a few others like Flying Merkel have some old sweetness, let's see them!

It's hard to tell from the pics what the tube set might be. But, judging from the fork crown, if that's the original fork, the dropouts and the lack of a metal head badge it's not Columbus SLX, SL or SP. Probably from the "Sport" or relaxed end of the catalog.

So do I! The dude that sold it to us first mentioned he thought it would fit me. Turns out it fit Gina!

It's Tange cromo (Sport), nothing fancy. But she says it's just as smooth as her full carbon, just a bit heavier on longer rides (50-100 milers)

Nice Bianchi. I don't recall seeing 105 as early as '84, so I suspect you might be right about it being an '88, assuming it's all still OEM.

It's funny too, I have a Masi Gran Crit that was made right here in Carlsbad back in '84, but I bought it new in '88.




I've always had a thing for '86 Schwinn Pelotons.


And Jan Nikolajsen helped me realize one of my boyhood dreams when he offered this Look frame for sale. (The lower, steel one; also an '86 I believe.)

One of my team mates picked up and old 86 Vitus with Shimano Santee in pristine condition on CL a month or 2 ago for 300 bucks.

Got the OG Kestrel unbuilt in the bike room.

Did I mention that Masi is Sweet?

Here's two I picked up this summer. Both were refurbished, ridden about, and sold. The Peugeot was $15.00 off Craigslist. It had never been ridden. The tires had to be sawed off the rims. Swapped out the period BMX hi-rise bars for a set of cro-moly MTB bars. Beautiful bike. Wish my wife had any interest in riding. Sold it to a cute college girl. Her mommy was going to buy it if kid didn't, but shipping to New York was cost-prohibitive. The Raleigh was a trash find by my old Dad. Got turkey wings, kickstand, stem shifters, and pie plates front & rear like a real 10 speed should.


I have a '96 Specialized Ground Control FS bike that I'm riding now. Makes you appreciate all the suspension advances that have been made. Heavy and boingy. In the garage is a '65 (?) American Eagle coaster brake bike that my rear neighbor gave me. It's going to be a keeper. Waiting on tires to arrive. Part of my cycling enjoyment is buying cheap bikes & getting them back on the road. They get ridden until they sell.

Just got the latest addition to the family back all prettied- and shinied-up from Cyclart. An '86 Schwinn Peloton in my beloved GF's size. She's going to build it up herself with my tutelage, and we'll have his-n-hers Pelotons.


Were originally going to build it up with 7803 (Dura Ace w/triple chainring) like my Pelotwin below, but half of the fun of building it is choosing the components yourself.

1977 Schwinn LeTour II I bought this past spring for sentimental reasons (had one stolen back then). Not a high-end bike. The frame's paint was getting pretty bad, and it was covered with stickers, so I had it blasted and powderocated. Also put on wider handlebars, new brake levers, new pedals (BMX style, as I use this for commuting) and new bottom bracket (upgraded to a sealed cartridge). Still has 27" wheels. Runs great, and I've taken it on a few 30 miles rides with no problems. If made correctly, steel bikes can feel just as good as carbon (though not as light). Currently keeping watch for something steel from the mid-to-late 1980s to rehab as a long haul road bike (maybe even a Pelaton).

My first bike as an adult was a 92 Bianchi Campione with Shimano RX100 and that same low end tange steel... celeste of course!

I still have it even though the right shifter doesn't work anymore (upgraded to Ultegra in about '97)... I'd probably even ride it again if I could figure out that dadgum shifter.

Don't know what the vintage cut off time is. Here is my 1998 Campione but now has a Cinelli Alter stem.

here is my 87' schwinn circuit I snagged for $150 earlier this yr w/ all its OEM parts. Just added new bar tape and use as my in town bike. I plan to install the 105 grouppo that came off my new supersize. No more buzzing my finger while shifting.

Here is my '87 Peugeot Triathlon. Really nice bike, everything original (105 Biopace - Mavic wheels) with the exception of the seat and the Bar Tape. Rides really well...

It's true. I outgrew my trusty Schwinn Peloton, but now I have two of them. Check Ebay & Craigslist.


And I also found the Look of my teenaged dreams (although we all hated Hinault's guts back then, thanks to our own partisan media. haha)
