Forum Ride - Gaging Interest

Now that temps have come down is anyone intrested in having a forum ride up to Crystal Lake and or Dawsons Saddle before the weather hits? Maybe the weekend before the Tour de Foothills. I also wanted to do Palomar in November or December. I rode Palomar last year on Christmas eve day (DAMN IT WAS SURE COLD). I have never been to Dawsons Saddle. Who is intrested?

Couple friends and I were talking about putting on a "Pie ride" around Palomar probably early next month or even early Dec. November weekends are getting filled fast for me.

I'd be down as long as there is more flats than hills. I'm pretty sure I am the worst climber on the boards.

i'd be interested since its nice to have some company on that 24 mile climb. haven't done dawson's in ages, but i usually shorten it up by starting at the lot by west fork and just go out and back. but i can just hop on whenever if you guys decide to start further out.

Let's leave early and do Laguna too. We can take the Pine Creek short-cut.

Palomar and Laguna on the same ride...?
Dang, I just remembered I have some dishes to wash that whole weekend. Try to give me a little more warning next time and I'll keep my schedule open for it.

OK so with all that said how does this sound?

When: November 3rd Encanto Park 7:00am. Clip in 7:30am
Regroups at: HWY 39/East Fork Junction, trailhead junction (big turn out), Crystal Lake, HWY 2/HWY 39 junction, Dawsons Saddle, Encanto Park
Distance:
-52 miles and 7,200 ft to Cystal Lake
-70 miles 10,100 ft to Dawsons Saddle
Who:
-Lesper4 (Loren)
-

We can all climb at our own pace and return when ever we want, the goal though is Crystal Lake and then Dawsons Saddle. I am not familur with anything above Crystal Lake so anyone who is, is welcome to provide some input. I imagine that the distance between Crystal Lake and the next juniton is pretty far?

I can't make it that weekend. If the date changes I'm definitely in.

I've ridden this ride at 5 times in the last few months while training for my ride up Haleakala in Maui. I have ridden to the C.L. Cafe on the way up and way down and I prefer stopping on the way down. Stopping on the way up means you are carrying more fluid weight up to Dawson Saddle than you need. It's roughly 5 miles from the C.L. turnoff to Hwy. 2 at Islip Saddle and another roughly 5 miles from Islip Sadde to Dawson Saddle. None of that roughly 10 miles is anywhere near as steep as the last 2-3 miles up to the C.L. turn off. If you made it to the C.L. turnoff, you can make it to Dawson Saddle.

The last time I was on the closed section of 39 above the C.L. turnoff, about a month ago, it looked like it had been swept recently. Take careful mental notes as you ride up the closed section, so you don't get surprised by the infrequent patches of sharp rocks that have slid off the mountain onto the road on the way down. If it's been swept recently, you may be able to do 25mph through there; if there's lots of debris, 15 mph can be a white knuckle ride. But caltrans does seem to be sweeping it regularly.

The descent from Dawson Saddle to Islip Saddle is my favorite pieces of hwy in SoCal. Easy 30-35mph and you never have to touch the brakes.

C.L. Cafe has great food. Tuna salad, chili, brownies, everything I've had there is amazing. They also have gatorade and bottled water. Free water is available at the Coldbrook Campground, 17.9 miles from Encanto Park on the left on your way up. Water is also available at the Ranger station at the mouth of the canyon where the MUP meets Hwy. 39. Those three places are the only ones I am aware of to get water on this route.

If it is a warm day, on the way down, a couple of miles or so down from the C.L. turnoff, you will come around a left in the road and it feels like you just rode into a furnace. From there all the way to Encanto it will be hot, potentially really hot. There is also climbing on the way out of the canyon once you pass the bridge to east fork. Thus, do not underestimate the amount of water you will drink on the way down. And remember to keep drinking water on the way down.

This is my favorite ride in SoCal and I am bummed that I'm missing it. By the way, I made it to the top of Haleakala, thanks to all the times I rode this ride.

PS. On the way up, the lower canyon from the ranger station to the West Fork area may have a significant amount of traffic. Since I put a really bright red flasher on my left seat stay (Dinotte 300R), vehicles have been giving me a much wider bearth.

Ordinarily I'd be all over a ride that's potentially beyond my current skills / endurance like this, but tragically, I have previous soccer commitments all weekend. Good luck and I'm looking forward to the ride reports.

cdp8, Too bad you cant make it but thak you for all the valuable information. I woudl love to make a different date but since this kind of concides with the TDF training the dates are limited. There is a training ride already scheduled for the 20th by the main sponser organizer. And I am hiking Cactus to Clouds on the 27th which means my legs will be dead. You will have to come out to the Palmor / Pie ride in December?!

Lesper, I'll keep an eye on the boards, that Palomar/Pie ride sounds like a good time. I've only done Palomar once, about 8 years ago, from some casino. Nice ride.

Next year, I want to ride from Encanto to Wrightwood and back. That should be just about 100mi on the dot. I'm planning on doing KOM again next year, so I would love to do it in early June while I'm still in shape from those three rides. Anybody interested?

Edit: Tourofcalifornia.org puts it at 101 miles and 13,100 feet of climbing from Pioneer Park

I did KOM this year, so I will pass, actually I will proably pass on MC only, that was hard. HB and BA I may ride again next year.
This is mine from last year, I rode with some crazy race freaks! https://app.strava.com/rides/2960055

Is the Tour of California an actual event? I wouldn't think anything would be sanctined on a unservicable (SAG) road.
