Palomar Ride - Guaging Intrest

OK here we go again. Everyone enjoyed the last ride which was early this month up 39 now we are going to heade South and ride Mt Palmor in early to Mid December? I know some people made specific requests so they can ride since they couldn't make it last time.

-What does everyone say to a Sunday ride this time?
-What date does everyone like best?
-What route do we want to take?

I wouldn't schedule this more than a week in advance, without a weather forecast. It will most likely be quite cold (possibly below freezing at the top), the descent on South Grade may be treacherous.

If you're just doing Palomar, it is more convenient to start at Harrah's Rincon Casino on Valley Center Road. If you want a longer route, check this one out

oh yeah! sunday!

i'll keep checking this.

i need to know early too so i can make arrangements to borrow and switch vehicles with my dad.

i think i've been in palomar before but that was on my sportbike. not sure how tough the climbing is so i gotta play it safe and not push myself a lot early on.

i don't mind getting dropped as long the ride is pretty straightforward. if there's lots of intersections and turning... yeah, i will get lost. i have an exceptionally bad sense of direction. lolz

I'm going up Thanksgiving day if I'm not stuck at work. I'm always up for a Palomar ride, and your route looks fun, but I'd say push the start back into town to get a few minutes to warm up. Starting from the casino, your climbing right away. And yes it will be cold but not below freezing unless you do it at dawn or at night. Just bring a jacket for the descents and you'll be fine. For winter Palomar rides I just use embrocation and wear a wool jersey.

It's easy. The road itself is tight switchbacks, but there's no way to get lost. Seriously. The road signage is enough.

Well, odds of it being below freezing in the middle of the day are fairly low, but it's been known to happen. At noon on New Years Eve 2010 it was 29 F at the end of South Grade and 31 F at the observatory. And it's just as likely that it'll be nice and warm, above 60 F.

Personally I wouldn't go up there as long as it goes below freezing at night. One, I don't like cold, two, that descent scares me even when it's dry, there's no black ice on the pavement and my fingers aren't numb with cold. Otherwise count me in.

So I hear all this interest but what about dates? Dec 16 or Dec 23? The 9th probably wouldnt work for me since I am planning a Palm Canyon Epic ride on that Saturday and the second is probably too soon for everyone?

I was kind of joking. Not sure if my knees can handle that. I'll ride my Soulcraft. I'm down for either date I guess. I'm going up this Gobble Day morning leaving Escondido around 7 or 8.

I haven't done this in over a year so yeah, I'm very interested but I got to be honest if the weather is bad (below 45) I won't go or rain/wind.
Loren this is PF. But if everything looks good I'm in maybe we can set up a carpool. I'm sure Brent would go too.
