Thanks for the advice - I can't figure out how hot it will be (not can I figure out why they make us wait for the double century riders to get to the start before we can go - start time is like 8:00 or 8:30!). The expected temperature in Lebec is high of 75, Bakersfield (fairly close by) is 84... Where is the main hot section? checking weather.com every hour helps me to mentally prepare for the ride. haha

After you hit Pinion Pines(?) RR you have an awesome down hill, a long big windy one (with a few rollers). But also that is you last shade until the next rest stop which is at mile 50. That next rest stop is in the bottom of the valley. The next climb is heart break hill which was also on fresh pavement when I rode it (extra black). There was a water stop at the top of the climb but it barely had anything in it and they too were trying to save stuff for double riders. There is some shade on that climb but it was supper warm! Also the first half of the ride was in the forest and you think since it is a big loop the forest would come back over the road but it was more like a desert.

wow I did not know they were saving sandwiches for double riders, that is terrible. I did not stop at Yerba Buena because it looked like there was little out when I got my sticker and Deer Creek looked barren. At 230 when I got to Decker there was plenty of sandwiches, a whole box. I ate a whole banana and two half sandwiches at the stop. I also took another half for the road which I used up Stunt.
If they saved sandwiches for other riders double or otherwise it is a clear indication they got it wrong. I personally misjudged my intake as I felt weak from lack of food twice but had it in my back pocket to come back quickly. Even toward the end of the ride in the flats I felt a bit off but could smell the finish.
Food certainly should be provided at stops so one does not need to bring anything in an ideal world. While bars and powders help they are not a substitute for real food. The cost of PBJ sandwiches is so little there really is no excuse not to have a surplus.

at MC i only carried gel, so I was starving. BA I carried way too much food - they had the best stops. For the next one I may do 3 bottles and a few clif bars just in case there are no PBJ after mile 25 or so. I wish someone would set up a Jamba juice at the end of one of these rides - haha

Thanks for the hydration tip. I was woken up on Sunday with a water bonk. Not a whole of warning weather wise.
Looks like it will be tough with only three rest stops to not bring food especially with the comments above of hoarding for the double. Looks like you will need to finish two bottles before each stop. The first one will be a bit tough with only twenty miles in to finish those bottles but based on the advice it seems wise.

Who is in for the third leg of this beast? Weather looks to be decent, with a pretty wide range of temperatures (upper 50s at the start and maybe mid to high 80s on the ride), and the fire seems to be burning away from the route. Hoping this ride will be less brutal than the first two!

I too am annoyed with the late start. It is the only two centuries (Mulholland-Heartbreak) I have participated in with 8am starts The ride is not close to anything and most will travel after the event. I could use those couple of hours. While the challenge itself is great I am uncertain if I will do it again due to it organization.
While century riders make up the bulk of their income they certainly seem to cater to the double folks.
I will do Breathless again as the organization was top notch.
The Malibu 7 was more low key and a great route might do that again

Anyone know what the traffic conditions are on I-5 in downtown LA at 6 am on a Saturday morning?

Yeah, the late start is going to mean not having to get up at 4am, so I'm all for it. It looks like the weather will be nice. There is no doubt BA is better supported (also a much larger ride).

I thought this was a beautiful ride, you guys should love it. Also think of it as 90 miles ride as the last 10 miles are relatively downhill. I would be out there but my wife is off.

I wish Heartbreak was just an out and back on the first 50 miles, maybe with an ascent of Pinos. That is the most beautiful stretch of 50 miles around, I did not enjoy the second 50 either time I've done it.

letting the double guys start a daybreak and holding back the century I think is wrong.
I am glad it is working for you but a 6am-6:30 start time as is normal would work better for me.
I am staying in a hotel because early long travel (coming from the same area as Hamster) are not conducive to a good ride for me.

I guess we got a compromise. :/ Not sure I like having to modify my plans the day before a race. Starts are now from 7am to 8am. I might just leave closer to 8 than 7:30 then, I'm sure I can make up 15 minutes before the first stop. They should just give times that the checkpoints are open and open the timing gate earlier.

The question is, is here a risk we get stuck behind the parade if we are slow...? It also looks like they moved the start time, and also moved the cur off at the end, if I read it right, so you don't have an extra hour to finish (so don't linger at the rest stops hoping PBJs will materialize - lol). We drove up today to stay over and the weather in Bakersfield is pretty mild (I figure this area is about the same temperature as on the ride), but the fire near the ride is huge and looks to be burning out of control. The smoke is heavy but was blowing away from the ride.

Assuming the parade is at Pine Mountain Club, it is about 18 miles from the start. So you need to get there before 10 to avoid a delay.

Getting stuck behind the parade should not be a problem, the parade is 18 miles from the start, we're starting at 7, Planet Ultra says that the parade is at 10, their own web site says that it's at 11.

Great ride today - weather was perfect, never got too hot. No smoke from the fires and but we did have a pretty strong headwind a few times. The rest stops were about the same as at MC, slightly better (although #3 had no bathrooms) but this time we brought our own food so it wasn't an issue. PBJ were in great supply at stop 3. This ride was the easiest of the 3, but if the headwind we hit was combined with the heat we were expecting, it could have been ugly. I did like the fact that this one and BA finish with a nice long downhill!

stop 3 porta potties were delivered 8 miles from the stop "oops" - I agree - miles 25 - 50 were some of the best riding I've done in a while - Great vistas v

You mean the ones where you had to pedal downhill into stiff headwind, or the ones where descents suddenly turned into 10% climbs? Vistas were good though.
I was hurting pretty bad the first 10 miles, not sure why. Headwind is usually demoralizing and my legs weren't doing too good. Things got better around the turn to highway 166. The stretch up on highway 33 was fun, got some tailwind, ran into some guys from Chula Vista going about my pace, didn't even notice how we got to 3700 feet. Final time, not great, but at least I made it!
Also, I'm definitely keeping the 42/28 crank.
BTW, stop 2 wasn't doing too good as far as restrooms went either. There was one unmarked restroom, there was a line and I heard that the toilet wasn't flushing. I saw more than one guy sneak out behind the building and come back a few minutes later.
