Superbowl...Meh, Rather Ride ha ha!
I haven't watched the Superbowl in over 15 years. Why, bike riding ha ha! Another year and another I'd rather ride my bike day. So Gina and I hit SART with the tandem. Nice day and it seems most riders hit the trail a bit early. That left us with the trail mostly to ourselves. Did we rush home to catch the end of the game? Heck no!
We did see Alex at the beach stop. A short visit then he was off to complete his 50 miler. And YES! I got him to smile ha ha! http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l2...psdb29362c.jpg |
No Superbowl for me either. Took my family to the L.A Zoo and had a nice time. Had it all to ourselves. Got back and caught the last 2 mins and the halftime show on youtube.

I had the best of both worlds yesterday. Left Anaheim for Palm Springs. Parked and rode up the Tram road. It just keeps getting steeper and steeper. Pretty soon I was just doing simulated leg squats on my 185 mm cranks. This is no place for a single speed. I relented as I passed the cloudline and the temp dropped to 42 degrees. That's what I'll be telling myself. Next was Raquetball drive in the next valley south. It doesn't looks so bad until you realize that the slope is just compounding with some areas of just plain mean rises that aren't long just steep. After a little tooling around above the water tanks on the north side of town I realized the cow I thought I saw was really a Mountain goat with a full rack. I came to this conclusion after watching it run straight up the side of a cliff for three hundred yards and then stop to watch me and graze again. From here I could also see Salton Sea. I spied a line of Bikes that seemed to stretch for a hundred yards down in the valley. I hit forty on the way down the hill and eventually caught up to the other bikes. They were a mish mash of people training for the Tour de Palm Springs next week. An eclectic group to be sure, some were puffing cigars and some had beers in there bottle holders. Some were just puffing. All were on road bikes so I had quite the time trying to keep up on my Cannondale Caffeine Single Speed. With a 48 x 20 I top out at twenty mph with bursts a little faster. This is a consequence of my 4000 gram rim tire combos. Great training bike but a tough go with fast roadies for any distance. On the other hand the thing is bulletproof, can jump curbs and run in nasty sandy softpack trails. The best thing is it weighs 17 pounds without all those gears and derailers and a three foot chain. After running with the pack for an hour it was time to load up and watch the game at my friends Palm Desert Estate. No mortgage has been paid on this property for six months and this was the blowout/moveout/Superbowl extravaganza. We spent halftime watching Beyonce wiggle and packing boxes. Back to Anaheim after the game landing home at 10pm. 66 miles today, sat on the right score until the last field goal, saw a Mountain Goat, got oogled by some 60 year old women, creepy , climbed hills like a kid again, finally. Saw the Superbowl. Did it all on water and coffee with a pack of homemade salmon jerky. Only mis-hap was I pulled right out in front of an older EV-1 electric car. It was lower than the trucks blocking my view at the T intersection and made no noise. I stopped at the stop sign , looked both ways, saw nobody, pulled out and there he was. No contact but startled me. No sound except the tires rolling against the ground. I will be even more viligent. Probably could of jumped over it in a pinch. Thats what I'm gonna tell myself......

We'd ridden a century on Sat. so Sun. I just did the OCRR Club ride (8:00AM Gold). After Jackie got home from her ride (with the Cerritos Club) we went out for dinner at Red Robin.
Yikes, the game was still on! So we had to listen to the last 2.5 minutes of play (which took about 20 minutes), then the Post Game Show . . . oh well, we really tried to miss the Super Bowl! Rick / OCRR PS: Here's the Garmin from the century (Southern half of the Camino Real Double course):http://connect.garmin.com/activity/268930064 |
Q: How do you know if somebody didn't watch the Superbowl?
A: They'll tell you. You're # 14 today. Congrats! ;) |
Make that #15...

I rode in the afternoon too. The beach path was pretty empty in the south bay.

Last Tuesday on the way home from work I had a terrible inner thigh cramp that stopped me while riding up the last climb. When I got home it felt like a pulled muscle, so I quit riding for the week. On Sunday I decided to try a short ride to loosen up for Monday's commute. Wife and I rode the tandem south on the Great Hipster Silk Road to the new Thorn Street Brewery and tried their excellent beers. Back north to the Poor House Brewery on 30th St. (GHSR), then finished off with more beer and Belgian style moules & frites at Blind Lady Ale House. We only rode five and a half miles, but my legs have recovered and today's commute was slow but painless.

I like the lime green bar tape.
(It's LizardSkin brand, btw, if you decide you want some. And very grippy/rubbery. Cannondale also makes a nice colored lime green from their "synapse" line. Suede finish/looks more like felt...had a harder time finding that one.) |
Hey Here's the century that the Rando Ramble riders from Baltimore did on Super Bowl Sunday:
http://randoramble.wordpress.com/201...estward-bound/ Not to shabby especially since Baltimore was in the superb bowl...wait a minute, won the Super Bowl:) |

I am going to be honest. I am still sore from that ride. Really deep, worn out, ongoing, won't leave me alone, sore Just got back from a recoup ride and still sore all over. Gonna try to ride with crowd at Tour De Palm Springs. If I can get up. Maybe I ride the flogging machine. i.e. 1986 Cannondale r600 with a few updates. That thing just says " Lets go Lets go ! Come on Come on Push Push Push". You know the type. Brutal yet wonderful. And has gears for the long run, even if it's only 12 of them. That is eleven more than I usually have.
