Poll. How do you feel about "Cali"

I first heard it used a lot while on a business trip to Florida in 1999. I would like to know how people feel about the word I have only recently started hearing here in California.

I agree, not one of life's most pressing issues, but to me, culturally interesting none the less.

I've only heard it used outside of California so I don't use it and would be miffed to hear it in state. Out of state...everyone uses it so it slips out.

Reminds me of the people who say "The OC". For those of you familiar with the City of Orange, it's the Circle in Old Orange, not the Plaza at Olde Towne Orange. Cali is the name of a cat, not a state.

Hate "Cali"; hate The OC (only people who don't live here say that).

And Flying Merkel... its simply "The Circle" everyone knows (or should) it's in Orange.

Those of you who have lived in California your whole life (and presumably nowhere else?) and hate it, should go take a perspective-sabbatical in a lovely $#it#0l3 like Texas or Saharizona before getting too strident about hating it.
There's a suspiciously fair&balanced Pgjackson-esque bias to this poll. Perhaps you'll be following him to FL soon?
In addition to the bias, there is also no response in this poll for those of us who have lived all over the country, including here before, and who know that California sucks a good deal less than most other places like (blech) Texas. I've lived in between 12 & 15 different places, including 3 years in Europe and I miss some things about every place (though I can't remember what it is about TX, KY, & GA that I miss); I feel qualified to say most of us have it GREAT here.
Only place that comes close for me is Colorado in the Spring, Summer & Fall. (Too many double-black diamonds have taken their toll on the knee, so Winter's lost its charm.)
The only place that has more and better bike lanes is Holland. (Okay, and their beer beats the tar out of the IPA that is currently dominating most taps here; and their nude beaches are not the exclusive domain of obese, gay men [actual women frequent them]; but their taxes are even worse.)

I think they're talking more about the term "Cali" and less about the State of California. I love the physicality of California, hate the politics of California. I don't care if you call it "Cali" or "California" or whatever.

Ah. My mistake. I don't mind it because that sophomoronic term reflects more about the speaker than it does about the subject.
If you must speak in txtspk, please just call it Cal.

I have never lived there, but when ever I hear the term used I always think it sounds silly. The two people I've heard use it the most were originally from California and left. Maybe it's their way of mocking the state, who knows.

Heh, I knew. We're all refugees from lesser states here. I was born in American Siberia ("NoDak", which the North Dakotans probably despise as much as we despise "Cali". )
I did a lot of internet dating and 80-90% of the women I met moved here from somewhere else. (Although that sampling could be skewed due to their having the best grammar on their internet profiles and getting a date with me in the first place...)

Maybe we should have a poll about what people think of others who say "could care less" rather than the correct "couldn't care less".

Anyway, the only time I've heard "cali" is in a rap song. I do think "OC" and "SoCal" seem fine. When I moved here the thing I thought was odd was that all the highways began with "the". I-35 in Austin is called "I35", not "the thirty five".

Lived here all my life, born in 63. I've heard lot sof people say Cali is only used by people from other states. That is so untrue. Maybe you're too young to know but I remember "Cali" was a big thing around here. Back in the 70's there were even car clubs that used it in their name.

To me it's nothing new, I've heard it all my life and just another fad word that came and went and still used by those old enough to remember.

Heck, do a search and still find some.

Yet you took the time to respond!!!!

People are too lazy to say the whole thing.
It's California not Cali
It's San Francisco not Frisco
it's Las Vegas not Vegas
It's Orange County not the OC

When I was in school back in D.C. (I wonder if they hate being called D.C.?) I had a professor who referred to California as "La La Land" That always made me crazy.

Back in 1999, people with red necks in Florida were watching Beavis & Butthead as well, shows you how smart they are!...........well I was watching too.

Wow, guess I'll be getting an earful next time I type SoCal in one of my threads.

Maybe I won't (err I mean will not) use contractions any longer either!
