Orange County Death Ride April 6th - Great training ride for Mulholland and Breathles

16 Pass O.C. Death Ride Century by Chuck Bramwell, Orange County Wheelmen

Saturday, April 6, 7:30 A.M.

103 Miles with 8,000 Feet of Climbing

It’s hard to beat Marty Breen’s Horrific Nightmare of a course for some steep hill training to get you ready for the Mulholland Challenge, Mulholland Double, Hemet Double, and upcoming Breathless Agony.

Marty has scouted out and ridden this new brutally hard training ride. A BIG Thanks to Marty for thinking this all up and hooking it all together.

The Route Sheet is at

https://www.caltriplecrown.com/centur...CDeathRide.xls

And printed copies will be available at the start of the ride. This is a great training ride with plenty of steep climbing interspersed with some recovery miles. Plus, there are plenty of ways to cut this ride short if you need to get home to mow the lawn.

This ride is not recommended for first time century riders ... it's got over 8,000 Feet of Climbing including many of the steepest roads in Orange County. HOWEVER, this ride has at least 16 options allowing everyone to ride and climb as much as they feel up to. So come on out and join us no matter how much climbing you have in your legs!!

My Strava Report for the “Full Enchilada” from 4/07/12 is at

https://app.strava.com/activities/6385461

Weather.com is showing Anaheim Hills with temps of 51 - 75 according to:

https://www.weather.com/weather/tenda...e+CA+1027190:5

This route is just awesome. TOUGH climbs. AWESOME downhills. Lots of options : you could easily skip some of the steeper climbs and continue right on the course catching up with riders ahead of you. Two great water stops. No need to drive anywhere: this is right in our backyard!! We are SO LUCKY to have these great training hills all around us in Orange County. If we lived in Florida, the most Elevation we could get would be a freeway overpass.

This ride will start at “The Square” (formerly Foodpark) in Irvine at Main and MacArthur (TBM 859-G4/28-C3) at 7:30 A.M. sharp so you should arrive by 7:15 A.M. Main and MacArthur is near the intersection of the San Diego Freeway (405) and the Newport (55) Freeway. Take the MacArthur Blvd. exit from the San Diego (405) Freeway and turn North ... Main Street is the first street Northeast of the 405 Freeway. Meet in the Parking Lot behind the Starbucks.

See you then,

Chuck Bramwell

Is this a come out and join ride or something that is organized?
Also the ride sheet is a little confuseing with the grade %. I think the distance of the grade is just as important?

Great route! Hate to miss the ugly Cannon climb starting at mile 90... but saturday is soccer day - may have to try this one Sunday, or at least pat of it.

That is a pretty good route, I know many of those climbs well and have the KOM on a couple of them. For you people on the South Coast, here is a ride I like to call the Coastal OC Tour of Flanders. It is not very long, but it is a slow ride due to all of the hills.

Enjoy

Lesper4, This is a come out and join ride that is organized. Chuck Bramwell (of OCW and CA Triple Crown) puts on these rides approx. once a month. No charge but no support either, i.e. food and water are on your own.

I've done this route before and none of the climbs are very long (this is O.C. after all).

Okay, good Lesper4, This ride does have a few flat bits but it's mostly either up or down!

True, it is a fun ride, lots of variety, i.e. lots of different kinds of climbs in terms of both steepness and duration.

Chuck usually gets a good crowd out for this one too!

I'm sure we took off a little after 7:30AM, so maybe you weren't at exactly the right place?

Anyway, here is my Garmin Data from the ride:
https://connect.garmin.com/activity/294230885

Great weather, excellent course, lots of climbing but nothing too brutal. I think we had about 30 riders at the start but we kind of spread out on the climbs so not sure how many finished.

This is highly possible. Hope to do this with you guys next time.
It's nice to get all the climbing right in our own backyard.

Not exactly in my backyard (those would be the Whittier Hills), but still a lot closer than going out to GMR/GRR, Angeles Crest Hwy 2, Hwy 39 or Hwy 38 up to Onyx.

On the other side of the coin, however, the O.C. Death Ride really didn't have any long climbs like you get in the other mountains of SoCal. Even the Santa Monica Mtns. have longer climbs than the O.C. Death Ride. Still, it was a fun event, lots of up and down and very few flat bits.
