Rider Down at GMR Today

My team was coming down GMR today around 10. We saw a guy that got hit by a car. He was with other riders. Anyone know him or what his status is? We just missed the crash by about a minute. He looked pretty bad.

Yikes. I was meant to be out there this morning at 10.

I see you saw the pic from the GMR blog already, but for others (via https://glendoramtnroad.blogspot.com/ ):

Just found out he will be ok. Although his calf was shredded.

There was an interesting story from the driver when we asked. Young kids, lowered cars.

Not assuming but its good that the guy had a GoPro on his bars.

Just glad it wasn't worse.

Be safe out there people

Good to hear he was mostly ok. Was it a car club doing a Sunday showing, or just some random dudes out for fun?

The guy I was supposed to ride with today on GMR was also the creator of Rideye...the blackbox cyclist video camera.

We were up on GMR/GRR on Saturday and didn't see anything. Yes, quite a few cyclists out and a few motorcycles but no crashes or OTS stuff. Good to hear the cyclist is going to survive and hopefully be alright (after recovery).

Maybe this all happened while we were eating breakfast at Mt. Baldy Lodge? Oh, maybe this was Sunday . . . nevermind.

OK, so, there were two different crashes on GMR on Sunday? The guy who was hit by a car around 10 (mile marker 12.7 - almost at the bottom, two switchbacks from the city), and the guy from the parallel thread (mile marker 7.6, way up near the top).

Well that's it for me... no desire EVER to do GMR either direction up or down... thank you very much!

You're missing out - it's a great road for riding with a pretty small motor vehicle population and tons of cyclists. Nothing is perfectly safe about road cycling but GMR is not particularly unsafe either. As always, ride with care and keep your wits about you.

On the 16th I was nearly run off the road by a group of drivers in, Porsche Carrera GT, (2-3)Ferrari 458 Italia, a Lotus Elise and a Lamborghini. Two of the Ferrari's crossed over the center line coming around a corner and were within 2 feet of me meeting their driver side headlights. I was just west of the Azusa cut-off/pass heading eastbound.

Half of these vehicles had go-pro's strapped to them.

Just around the corner off HWY 39 is the Cogwell Dam to Rincon Red Box Loop. 30 miles of dirt about 5000 ft of climbing (depends on whose STRAVA you read). About the same but no cars (well some ATV on Rincon Red Box but not many). Just rather do that. I've driven GMR several times to check it out.... each time there were motorcycle groups and fast cars racing up it... no thank you...still have things to cross off my bucket list... can't do that if I am dead!

I road that day too, I was going up the final 3 mile climb to the village, they were OK for me but I do understand coming from a car club myself. Also if you hit the road early you hit much less traffic. Every now and then you hit a car club and I have noticed the bigger the club the slower they go. I feeler safer on GMR then I do on the way to GMR.

Yeah, I come from a background in cars as well. I've driven GMR "spiritedly" in my own cars, but always with a heavy dose of caution. They were not the only group we came across that day, but definitely the only one that scared me.

Everybody who drinks water dies!

No, I get it. you just go hog all the dirt and leave the roads to us poor souls who can't afford mountain bikes.

It looks like the Medevac is by LA County Fire going by the yellow/white colors. I doubt you will face a bill for it. Billing is only done by private medevac service.

Land ambulance in LA county is now about $1400 minimum.

Best wishes in the healing process. Grab some Tegaderm bandages and neosporin, ice the hip, and rollout the ITB .
