Route from Sherman Oaks to Santa Clarita?

Thinking about riding to my daughters soccer game tomorrow which is basically around the corner of Newhall Ranch Rd and Bouquet Cyn Rd. Leaving from Sherman Oaks (Woodman and Burbank)...any suggestions on a good route? What is Sierra Highway like...one option I mapped has me on that for awhile?

I'd take this quick route I threw together for you (used to live in Santa Clarita & rode it regularly). Sierra Highway drops you down into Newhall Ave, a fast-moving car roadway with no bike lane, shoulder, and bad railroad tracks.

Sections to be aware of...
  • Mile 2.6--3.4 Woodman between Saticoy & Roscoe
  • No bike lane, although a 3rd lane exists w/parallel parked cars on the side, giving a pseudo bike lane, as long as no other cars want to share it with you.
  • Mile 11.4 San Fernando & Roxford St.
  • The bike path along San Fernando ends, putting you on San Fernando. There is potential for fast-moving cars here, but few of them, depending on time of day.
  • Mile 13--14.1 San Fernando Rd between Balboa & Sierra Highway
  • No shoulder, no bike lane. Could be more traffic than just prior to Balboa intersection. Once past Sierra Highway, traffic will lessen.


That's it. At bottom of Valley St in Newhall you shoot across onto nice, wide Orchard Village Ave for a mile, then onto Santa Clarita's bike path system.

Woodman to Osborne, at Foothill Osborne becomes Little Tujunga which eventually becomes Sand Canyon down to Soledad and the bike path systems.

The route over little Tujunga includes two distinct mountain climbs, which is great if that's what you want.

When my son had a tournament up there, I decided to drive up with the bike and found it more enjoyable to ride a loop than dealing with San Fernando road.

Well, I ended up going up Balboa all the way till the end (not the most scenic, but not terrible either). Crossed over the 5 and went left (north) on Foothill. Started climbing and it turned to Sierra Hiway...went left on Newhall Rd. then Railroad to Bouquet Cyn...got lost once and gained about 400' of extra credit. 31 miles...about 2200' ft of gain.

How was Foothill next to the 5? It looks narrow, shoulderless, and uphill.

Right! It was a blast over and back for 4 climbs with "flatland" gearing.

Yes, yes, and yes...but for a very short distance. At the top of that little rise it goes downhill steeply but right away at the bottom of that pitch it seemed to widen and become a little friendlier

Wow-San Fernando Rd Bike Path! I lived in some Condos on Foothill next the the Cemetery at Bledsoe. When I left in '04, that section north of San Fernando was "Hit the road, or suffer Goat Head hell."
