Sweet Stacy, I will be doing the Alta Alpina Double the week before!
I did the KOM as well and now that it is finished I wish I did MCD as well. They ought to create a BAD (over onyx summit and around the lake and back?) Maybe next year as the stage race?

We should seriously think about suggesting this.

Mulholland Double
The newly created BAD
Heartbreak Double

Yikes.

Congrats! I hope you like your new socks.

Heartbreak Double is pretty epic.

My test ride to Crystal Lake Café on Sat. went well, no back pain, seemed to be climbing better than recently. Of course it was cold, and wet (riding in a fog/cloud above the Spring) but I was dressed for it so overall no problem. Riding with Linda Adams and Vertical Bob.

After lunch at the Café we rode down to East Fork (yes, the descent was very chilly), Camp Williams, Little GMR, Big GMR, then back to Sierra Madre and over to Encanto.

Here it is on Strava: https://www.strava.com/activities/310396900 So, 68 miles with 8,934 feet of climbing . . . and I'm feeling optimistic about the Eastern Sierra Double next Saturday. I know for The OC Rebel riders, Andrew, Peter, David, Linda, Keith and myself will be there.

I'll be wearing my CAL Triple Crown Hall of Fame (green) jersey and be riding my usual white/black/red KHS Team bike. Hope to be riding with my favorite doubles partner, Peg Miller (from San Jose) but she's been getting faster while I've been getting slower . . . have to see how that works out!

The weather was a bit on the hot and windy side . . . actually. The forecast was a lot better than the reality. Having said that, we did survive and had a fun time thanks to the wonderful Planet Ultra volunteers.

The battle with the headwind from Benton to Bishop was rather brutal yet I have experienced worse. Must be the longest (and most boring) 36 miles in Ultra Cycling. That's my opinion, anyway. So yes, suffer we did and overall (in spite of that) it was a fun double. And my back didn't give me any trouble at all. Those PT exercises do really work!

Well the big weekend is upon us. Some have the Grand Tour 100, 200, 300, 400 highland and lowlands routes. I have Alta Alpina 8 pass. Got my last training ride in this weekend. Personally I would rather keep a ride on the hard side then taper too much. I have already had two weekends off in the last month. Good luck to everyone
https://www.strava.com/activities/329635916

Just optioned that there is a fire burning in and around the last couple of passes and threatening Markleville (started 2 days ago)!?

Good luck!

After much back & forth, I've decided to ride the Grand Tour Highland Double this weekend. It will actually be my first double this year and only my second ever. I focused so much on the KOM series, which went well enough. Then I rode a simple little 20k TT and now I've got that bug.

Ive got the Death Ride in a few weeks. Will likely focus on TT training in the immediate future, and race a series of 5-7 TTs this fall. Might still squeeze in Solvang & DOW, we'll see.

Hopefully GT Highland goes ok this weekend, I haven't really been training for that distance. Yikes.

Knock em dead this weekend!

No posts in a long time.

Who is coming up/on their way to the Mt Tam Double? My favorite double, I'll be there on my road bike this year.

OK well the AA was canceled because of the fire so I road the GTLL with some friends. I pulled through the winds all day.
https://www.strava.com/activities/334444767

Then I was able to sneak in AA as a staff ride the next month. I think I went out to hard in the beginning as I bonked half way up Ebbetts. I ended up making it to Monitor in time but I was pretty sure it would be complete torture to get down and back up and finish in time. Next year for sure. At least I did ride back to the start where some other people got a ride.
https://www.strava.com/activities/349114818

Next on my schedule will be one of the three or more: Bass Lake, Solvang Fall or GT Winter. I haven't signed up for any of them still trying to figure out which fit in. Bass Lake I think for sure and maybe GT again.

I'll probably do Bass Lake and have already signed up for GT-Winter, also known as Dead of Winter Double (or DOWD). Fall Solvang . . . probably not.

Im registered for DOW, not 100% sure I'll do it though. Probably.

Im also semi-planning on Fall Solvang.

Its going to depend on how some other stuff goes for me this fall.

Well the Grizzly Century has been canceled due in part to the Rough fire and the organizers I guess are firefighters and have no time (not to mention they are not motivated and may not continue the event). Given that I am not sure if I am going to do the Bass Lake Double in the same area...?

Also the information has come out about Everest Challenge and all thought it is a challenge it is not grand or magnificent. 2 repeats (front and back twice) on the Death Valley Road climb and then 12 circuits around the Alabama Hills. Most likely due to the smoke from the Rough fire. I was looking forward to the big long and high Sierra climbs so I guess I will be doing this next year.

DOW is still a go and most likely Solvang Double since I have a discounted entry. I am also planning on the Deer Creek Death Ride.

Okay, I'm signed up for Knoxville and DOWD and plan to sign up for Bass Lake. That should do it for doubles for me for this year!

Rick, was Knoxville cancelled? I asked a friend a few days ago who was signed up, and he hadn't received any emails (as of mid-week I would have thought it had to be, given the second half goes through the fire area and there is no way to re-route around it).

update: Oh, just checked the website and it appears that it was updated with today's date that it had been cancelled.

Yes, Knoxville was cancelled for 2015 due to fire damage. Sorry to hear that; it's my favorite double every year . . . except for 2015 obviously!

There's a century that (kind of) replaced the double but it's too far for me to drive for just a century. Instead I'll be doing a century closer to home; starts at Red Box and goes to Wrightwood and back. I think it's a Karen Climbfest but not 100% sure.

Rode the Bass Lake Double last Saturday; very hot day but the Fresno Club kept the ice and water available which made the double do-able!

Getting ready for Oceanside Double next.

Yeah I was in Santa Barbara doing an unsupported century, we started climbing Old San Marcos Grade up and over Painted Cave at 11:45, we were fricken crazy (at mile 50). It was triple digits on the climb and luckily there is a water hose at the top, I soaked my self so we could keep going up to the ridge which was so much cooler. FYI Gibraltar is so fricken amazing, fresh pavement from the south saddle off Cumbre peak all most all the way to the bottom.

Next week for me is Solvang Double and then Deer Creek Death Ride and finally Mt Haleakala.

Hi All,

I had a great time (overall) on the Oceanside Double even though it was hot (108 at the base of Montezuma) so the same high I saw on Bass Lake. Thankfully it was down to 88 when I hit the summit (Ranchita). Cole grade was in the dark so much cooler by then.

Dead of Winter Double was last Saturday and that one was cold in the morning (33 Deg. through the Naval base) but once the day heated up a bit it was fine. Lots of riding in the dark, of course, but other than that, pretty much all good.

That makes 8 doubles for 2015 (Camino Real, Hemet, Spring Solvang, Eastern Sierra, Grand Tour, Bass Lake, Oceanside and Dead of Winter with a DNF on Devil Mountain.

That is great Rick! I completed 6 doubles this year: Camino Real, Southern Inyo, Heartbreak, Grand Tour, Solvang Fall, Dead of Winter and a DNF on Alta Alpina.
My car registered 27 driving down Las Vergines and yes the base frontage road was super cold. I have to say it was fun riding up Casitas Pass in the evening and down, never down that before.

We rode Casitas late afternoon, so plenty of light but it got dark on us going by the motorhomes/RV's along the beach. So yes, lots of riding in the dark but overall a fun day on the bike! No mechanicals with the slight exception of getting my Garmin 800 to accept the recharger power (didn't record a mile or so while I sorted that out) but eventually okay.

Good job with the doubles.

I halfheartedly planned to do the Stage Race this year. I finished Devil Mountain, but decided I wasn't in shape for Terrible Two and didn't sign up. I'm still waiting for Death Valley to return, and at the moment expect to do Davis' full brevet series rather than any of the spring doubles. A friend suggested doing the 508 as a two-person recumbent team and that has sounded like a fun change (half a 508 is barely more than a double!), so we'll see where that goes.
