Bike Rental/Borrow in PHX, Early March?

Late in February I will be visiting the Phoenix area for over a week. Looking for options on any BF'ers who might want to help by borrowing a bike to me, or make some income by renting me a bike. If no, can anyone steer me towards a good retail rental service? Ideally I would want a road bike, but I really would take anything halfway reasonable. Singlespeed/fixed is just fine also.

I'm about 6', and should ride 56-58 (but I am HIGHLY adaptive for this situation)

Thanks for any help! :)

What part of Phoenix, actual downtown or a suburb? I know that bike shops in Tempe rent bicycles and that is the closest city to downtown Phoenix. There is a bike co-op in Tempe (http://www.bikesaviours.org) which may have a bike or two to loan out, not sure of that.

I'll be staying fairly far north. Abouts 101 & 51. But I'm not too worried about distance, if it's within a feasible one-way distance... I'm there!

istomtom 02-01-09 01:56 PM

The 101 at the 51 is approx 24 miles (one way) from the bicycle co-op.

Yesterday we refurbished four retired police mountain bikes (two Giants and two Treks). They'll eventually be placed as a "bike library" at a local business but probably not before you're here so you're welcome to borrow one. Just let me know.

If you are looking for a tricked out bike, Bike Barn has a Specialized S works or something, only in a 56cm. I couldn't ride it withoutl ike a 350mm post. But I am 6'2ish. I would call ahead though. What kind of bike are you looking for really?

laryanshabaz 02-02-09 09:54 PM

Looks like Bike Barn advertises that they have Tarmac Experts available @ $330 for 4-7 days! AHHHH!
I'd like a roadbike, but I don't have any plans for any epic rides or races. That bike is overkill, and I guess I'm too much of a cheapskate for that much money. (Or the $200 for a Trek 2.1 really)

I'd like drop bars, and a singlespeed would be cool. A Raleigh Sojourn or One-Way, something with a bit fatter tires might be nice. It appears I'm begging though, so I don't want to be accused of choosing.

I'll PM you about the police MTB, istomtom. Thanks.

When my brother was in town he rented a bike from Tempe Bicycle, it was an entry level Masi, I forgot how much though, less than a hundred bucks for a few days I believe, they also have helmets and all that too.

laryanshabaz 02-07-09 07:06 PM

Tempe Bicycle actually looks like a pretty good deal. $110 for 7 days on an Ultegra spec bike with very reasonable helmet/patch kit/lock rates.

I'm liking that. Good looking out.

Here, I found this:

At last report these shops were renting bikes. We do not have specific details on their policies. no doubt, lemme know if you need someone to ride with :thumb:

Okay! I'm renting a Masi from Tempe Bicycle. I want to thank everyone for their input, and particularly Tom from T.B.A.G. despite the fact that I'm going to pay for a normal rental. It's good to know that an open hospitality is out their for cyclists.

Now, what kind of group rides can I find the first week of March?!

bigmo 02-26-09 11:19 PM

Hi, sorry for the late reply - I don't hang out much in this area. I have a vintage Benotto (80s, downtube shifting, mostly super record). I've loaned it out to a few people over the years, and it would probably be decent fit for you. It's hanging in the garage for a couple years and would love to hit the road again. I'm nearly positive I gave it a tune up before storage, and could find some decent tires. PM me if you are interested. I'm in Scottsdale area.
Good luck,
-Dirk

Noooooo! I would have done this in a heartbeat if I hadn't already rented the Masi.
Thank you for the thought though!

This may help, http://www.sportsfun.com/gaba/rideschedule.html.. They do weekly group rides. If you were here a week later you could sign up for the Tour De Cure on March 14th.

Hello Folks,

I'll be visiting the west of Phoenix area, Avondale to be precise, (I think this is called West Valley) the week before Memorial Day weekend. Are there any 40-60mi group rides that I can join? Also, are there any bike shops that rent roads bikes in that area? All the previous suggestions made in this thread seem to east, central or south of Phoenix. Any shops that do that in the western side? Thanks for all your help!
