SW Oklahoma City?

Hi,

I'm an avid cyclist and commuter. I stand a chance of getting transferred to the OKC area, around Mustang. I will probably be looking to take up residence there as well in order to be able to commute to work. I see many routes around the OKC area on a couple of sites but none that I can find in the SW OKC area? Is there something I should know about? How would the commuting be in this area? How is the motorist to cyclist tolerance in the area? I noticed, via Google earth, that most of the roads are fairly narrow, with no shoulders. I do also notice that OK has a fairly low bicycle accident rate as compared to other states.

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

I don't live in Oklahoma City now, but I did grow up there (I now live in Norman, about 20 miles south of OKC). My guess is that the low bicycle accident rate is due to low bicycle usage. Motorists are not used to bikes, making a commute along heavily trafficked roads fairly dangerous. Will you be working downtown?
On the other hand, there are good paths and trails around Lake Hefner in north OKC, around Draper lake in SE OKC and they are building some paths at Arcadia lake just outside of Edmond. It also doesn't take long to get out of the city (it's pretty flat around Mustang though).

Someone once threw a full water bottle at me from their car window as I was riding in the south OKC/Moore area. I don't miss living there.

I used to live there, and would not categorize it as especially bad, but I despise flat riding, and central Oklahoma is all about flat.

Have you checked out Strava.com for segments in that area?
