Cannondale Eccentric

Using the next few weeks to go thru the 1999 RT 1000 we got this fall. I wanted to service the eccentric , so I removed the bolt to the wedge and tried to turn the eccentric to loosen the chain. So far it is still tight, so I was going to put the bolt back in an lightly tap it, as I've read, and I sure wish I had before I pulled it out. Now, it does not line up, so I cannot thread the bolt back in.
Soooo, do I try put some penetrating oil around the wedge and tap it lightly, or what is my best course of action? I wanted to remove the eccentric to clean and lube, as well as to ck the bb, but I'm stuck at the moment.

Do NOT hit it with a hammer!

The tandem@hobbes link has it correct. Insert a bottle cage bolt through washers, or better yet, a washer and a cone wrench, from the other side as you unscrew the long cinch bolt from the other side. Once the bottle cage bolt is threaded, then remove the long bolt. The cone wrench holds the bolt head against the BB shell so you can dislodge the wedge. Really simple.

Remove crank arms? What kind of advice is that? How can you adjust your timing chain with the cranks off? You can't. Not remotely necessary. The method above works fine with cranks on. Loosen eccentric, adjust with green Park pin tool and re-tighten. Simple.

Ample, AMPLE waterproof grease EVERYWHERE upon reassembly. Just remove all the stuff that squishes out upon eccentric re-tightening.

Good luck.
