Older cannondale road tandem - rear hub ?

We have a Cannondale road tandem from about 1992. Near new condition, just been hanging in the garage for the last 25 years . I've taken it down, cleaned it up, replaced tires and tubes. Working on getting the derailleurs working well. This bike has Shimano cranks but Suntour derailleurs (3x7), brakes - cantilever, and shifters (grip shift, bar end)

One odd thing I noticed was the rear hub. It is threaded on both sides of the hub. The way the axle is set up the freewheel can only go on one side (the stack up to the frame nut is different from one side of the wheel to the other). the hub itself though is symmetrical.

I'm wondering if there is a purpose for the threads on the non-drive side? Idle curiosity really I just found it a bit odd.

That is for a drag brake, you probably have a tab on the bottom of the non-drive chain stay which is where you attach the arm on the brake. At that time the ARAI DRUM BRAKES were available to help with reducing speed on long descents. Here is a write-up from the Tandem Geek on a newer offering for these. https://tandemgeek.wordpress.com/201...now-available/

Thanks Paul. I was wondering if it was for a brake of some sort.

Doesn't sound like the follow on to the ARAI brake did well.
