Cracked Dyad rim

We had developed a creak in the front eccentric BB and so I was servicing that and a couple of other things on our tandem last night. When I went to remove the rear wheel it had a significant wobble which wasn't noticeable when we had gotten home from our ride. Taking a closer look I saw that one of the spoke holes had broken out of the Velocity Dyad 40 hole rim and the spoke had pulled. We have had these wheels for about 4 years and I'm guessing they have about 4,000 miles on them. What has been the typical life cycle on the Dyad?

I've read some of the journals on "Crazy Guy On A Bike" it looked like the Dyads do have a tendency to crack but was curious what others have found.

I'm glad this didn't happen on our Shore Ride last week where we rode from the Reading PA area to Ocean City NJ.

I built 5 wheels with Dyad rims in 2010 and 2011. They're all still in service. I don't think I've even had to true most of them. They've each seen a mix of roughly 90% paved and 10% unpaved, 90% unloaded and 10% loaded riding. Function and estimated mileages below:
32h single, rim brake, front, 9k mi
36h single, rim brake, front, 7k mi
36h single, rim brake, rear, 7k mi
40h, tandem, disc brake, front, 3k mi
48h, tandem, rim brake, rear, 3k mi

To the OP, how many spokes and what's the typical wheel load?

It was a 40 hole rim build to a WI hub. We are a larger team which is why I used the 40 hole rear. We ride with a rack which carry a repair kit and a couple of tubes and co2 cartridges put a few odds and ends on some rides. I'm tall and large guy so we are a 400 pound team, that was why I selected this rim/hub/spoke count set-up. We use a 36 hole on the front on this set. This one was being used on our rim brake tandem. We have a set of Deep V's which I'm putting on till I get this one fixed, I preferred the wider Dyad rim as we like to switch back and forth between 28'c and 32's and I didn't think anything wider the 28's on the Deep V was appropriate.

I connected with Velocity and they were super helpful. Since I had already had the wheel rebuilt they offered a credit for the value of the rim. Great customer service! I think I'm going to use that to get a pair of Deep V's. I think I'd like to build a set of the Deep V's for the Co-Motion using White Ind hubs. That would give us a wider Dyad for 32 or wider and then the narrower Deep V for use with 28'c.

Velocity is a great company, there are many reports of their efforts to stand behind the product.

We're running Velocity NoBS 48H rims on our T50 - we're a much heavier team.

We had a bad experience with a 32 spoke Velocity Fusion wheel Santana sold us saying it was "bullet-proof". It wasn't. Velocity sent us a replacement rim that didn't have the sidewall machined. There p After breaking a 2nd one, we gave up on the combination deciding it was anything but bullet-proof, but our contact with Velocity were very positive. Their product wasn't bad, it was just not strong enough for us in the configuration it was built.

I talked to a couple different people at Velocity and was very appreciative of the time they gave us. I would buy their product again.

We had a pair of wheels with 40h Dyad rims that came with our Co-Motion Mocha that lasted us for nearly 15,000 kms before the sidewalls were a bit thin. we are now touring with 2" tyres instead of the 1.5" tyres we used to tour with. New wheels are 36h Velocity Blunt 35's which we're very happy with

Is anyone using the Sapim oval nipple washers on their tandem wheel builds?

Washers | Sapim

I've been thinking of using these on all non-eyeleted rims, and many Velocity rims are great rims but don't have eyelets
