There are a few mtb related groups on Facebook:

1 - Tandem Mountain Bikes. By far the largest.
Admin/Owner is Alex Nutt (who also owns MTB Tandems Inc)

2 - Tandem Off-Road Bikes. intended more for gravel grinding, touring non-pavement, etc.

3 - the newest group - S.O.O.R.T.A. (Self Organized Off Road Tandem Adventure) created for communicating about these "unofficial" events across the country and quickly becoming rallies with 10, 20 or more mtb tandems hitting the trails together.
In order to see the SOORTA Events page, you may need to:
1. Log into Facebook
2. Join the SOORTA group
3. Finally, go to:https://www.facebook.com/groups/1534...484183/events/

#3 , wanted to clarify a bit. I would not truly consider SOORTA as unofficial, but rather a different format that works for almost all teams that understand these events are not rallies. There is no entry fee for the SOORTA event, but some SOORTA events piggyback onto non SOORTA pay to ride events.

Stand alone SOORTA events, such as the recent Santos event, does place a certain amount of responsibility onto each team. There is no host hotel, so each team must accomodate their own means to a place to stay / sleep. At Santos, most teams stayed in the campground.

Regarding the rides, off road can differ quite a bit from road riding. On a road ride, most often you have a route sheet for the distance you plan to ride. Off road adds in the element of trail difficulty. Teams need to be honest about not only their fitness for the distance, but also their ability level since the trails, at some locations, such as Santos have different skill levels.

SOORTA is in no way the same as attending a rally where you pay an entry fee and get the perks that may come with that. SOORTA kind of evolved out of the informal few teams bike getting together to ride here in Florida. It was not envisioned at the time to become so popular, however the basic format remains. We all come to have fun, enjoy the company of other teams while having that informal ride together.

SOORTA Santos had 22 teams attending. This was the third time the event happened. Each year, the attendance increases. For an event so informal and counting on each team being somewhat semi self sufficient, no doubt not everyone leaves happy. The key though is that at these events if you want to ride and have fun, plus enjoy the other stuff like making TShirts and pot luck Saturday dinner, it is there. If you expect more than you are willing to put in, expecting that paid rally type atmosphere, that may not happen.

With so many teams this year, I appologize for not hanging out with each one.

On the road tandem side, again, here in Florida, the PANTHERS has several rides during the year that are very similar to SOORTA and not a paid rally. Overall, these are well attended and a lot of fun. So the format can work both in off road and road.

Can be a geometry (wheel flop, fork trail, etc) issue and possibly weight distribution (very front end heavy). Knobbies probably won't solve much in this case.

Do you have the specs for your frame, fork and wheel size?

Sorry but that info is lacking geometry and fork detail needed to determine trail and wheel flop... key factors in how the bike reacts to turning the fork.
