mt lemmon

Has anyone ridden a tandem up Mt. Lemmon near Tucson?

Nice ride

We’ve climbed it twice, or at least most of it. We stopped at the visitors center not realizing that the top was a little higher near the ski area. It is a gorgeous climb, so beautiful you don’t think about how hard you are working. The road and shoulder are wide enough that cars are not a concern. What is a concern is that we did not find any place to get water until the visitor center. On a March ride we sat beside snow drifts at the top and cruised down to 90 degree temperatures at the bottom.

I have climbed it several times on my half bike and believe it’s is definitely doable on a tandem for an in shape team. As mentioned above, water is very limited. One other potential issue is the winds can get quite strong near the bottom (first 10ish miles) which can be an impact both climbing and descending. Traffic has never been bad but there are always folks in sports cars or on crotch rockets aiming to set speed records. Ride safe and enjoy

We rode Mt. Lemmon up to Summerhaven on the tandem in late October. It is a very nice ride. It has a more rolling profile once you pass the visitor center, so there is some relief from the long steady climb. It was much colder at the top than we expected, so the descent was pretty tough. Overall, we found Mt. Lemmon to be a very satisfying day in the saddle, and we were glad we had a granny gear on the bike. Regards. Joe

If you like Mt Lemmon, you'l probably also like Kitt Peak (SW of Tucson). The ride up & down is great. The ride out & back - not so much.
