96 Cannondale RT2000 Rehab complete
Today, following a rebuild of a beautiful and (our first) tandem, my wife and I went for a fantastic 11 mile test ride over our moderate rolling Maine roads. 96 Cannondale RT2000 Rehab project #1
The rehab went as follows. My almost new 105 brifters replaced the bar ends and Dia compe levers. Tektro 926 mini-v with a Kool Stop Dual Compound replaced the underwhelming canti’s. In order to set the brake pads as close as possible to the rim and still be able to quickly and painlessly slacken the cable to let you unhook the noodle, Shimano SM-CB90 in-line barrel adjuster are the way to go. To match the 105 triple brifter with the Deore LX front derailleur I installed a Jtek Shiftmate 7. With a 9 speed brifter I was able to swap out the 8 speed cassette for a 9 speed with a slightly larger 30 tooth cog. The rear derailleur is a Deore XT M737/SGS. Tires are Schwalbe Marathon 35C. I replace stokers “suspension” seat with a carbon post I had and a Brooks Flyer. My saddle is B17. Handlebars are some Specialized ones I had with the Zerts insert. Nice comfy Domain Cycle tape. Just by raising the stem with a Delta Pro and with a Specialized long stem I had, I replicated my road bike cockpit.
The ride was incredible, the take offs were ugly but we never came close to toppling. Of course I was first trying to ride the tandem while operating the controls and listening intently to the drive train, which you practically can’t anymore since you are so far forward of it. Everything seems dialed in so far. The ride on those Marathon tires at 85 PSI felt really comfortable. The bike felt solid, not a rattle. And as a team we were great, the beginning of a new adventure!

After our first test ride.
