Touring Michigan Upper Peninsula
I am looking to do a three day self-supported bike tour in the Michigan Upper Peninsula region in early August. I am taking my little brother, age 13, on his first bike tour. I have never been there before. I am looking for any suggestions or recommendations on routes. I am thinking about doing a loop between Escananba to Munising to Ministique and back to Escananba. I want to stay on paved roads but I don't want to ride on roads with too much heavy traffic. Some of the roads I am thinking about going on are Route 2, H13, and 94. Is the terrain in that area, particularly through Hiawatha National Forest, hilly or flat?
I would greatly appreciate any information or advice on bike touring in this region. thanks John |

I will also be in the UP the week of August 7th. Can you share that information please?

Check out my tour journal posted here, try searching for "superior".
The area is pretty flat from my memory. Depending upon the day of the week you ride it can be very heavy trafffic. Route 2 is particularly busy, while 94 can be much lighter. Does it have to be a loop toor? Consider staying in one location and doing day trips. Like riding out from Negaunee east, south, and north. Just a thought. |
Years ago rode from St. Ignace to Drummond Island, then took ferry and rode the island. Some rolling hills. Nice.
