I want to buy a used bike rack for my SUV which doesn't have a hitch. I'm wondering if I can use the same bike rack a honda fit would use (could just borrow a friend's)? I keep looking for one with a heavier capacity, but not much luck without a hitch. Does anyone have a recommendation, or is it more likely that I will struggle to have a rack at a higher capacity with no hitch? There's a road and a mountain tandem I want to move around. I have a Rav4. Thanks.

I wasn't aware that racks had capacities. Most racks will take multiple single bikes and a modern tandem is 1.5-2 single bike-weights. Wouldn't think it would be a problem. Back when I used a rear strap-on rack, I'd sometimes take the front wheel off to reduce width.

That’s a great point. I’m going to just have to test some out. I didn’t know much about capacities either, just read a comment somewhere and made me nervous about not getting the right one. I’d also love to just be able to borrow my friends but not sure about which ones are only for SUVs vs a hatch like Honda Fit.
