Flight Deck Question
 

Hi there Flight Deck users, I have a quick question. I just installed a wired Flight Deck on my new 'Dale Tandem. It's a perfect thing for a tandem, and I really like it. However, there is one small glitch I'm experiencing. The terrible instructions indicate that when you start to roll (for a minimum of 10 seconds), or if you touch one of the buttons on the shifters, the display will awaken from the clock mode. Mine doesn't. I can get it to come to life, however, if I push switch "A" on the bottom of the unit. This doesn't seem right, but I'm getting by. Am I missing something???? Thanks in advance...

Hm, I always hit the "A" button around the back before I ride. I did muddle through the manual when I got my flight deck in December, but I don't recall this other turn-on procedure you describe. What page is it on?

Page 14, section 14 (Power Saver Function). After I posted this query, I went to the Shimano, and after quite a bit of searching, I found the latest manual and it stated things differently. It now says to push switch "a" or swithch "b" to wake the unit up. My manual must be older than the computer, or it is a misprint. At any rate, I now know. This is a wonderful computer with a great concept, but the documentation is not the greatest. This seems to be an all to often common problem with Japanese products. BTW, these are on sale at Colorado Cyclist for a measley $49.95. Great deal. Thanks for your reply, Greg...

Yeah, I have an SC-6502. The power save info in my manual is on p. 13, and doesn't seem to mention the feature you describe.

I run one on my tandem and my buddy runs one on his single. We both have to push the button on the bottom side of the computer to "wake" it up.

I owned a flight deck a few years ago, that automatically "woke up" just by rolling for a few seconds. The new one I own now requires that I manually push the button.

It must be that they sent me an old style manual and a new style Flight Deck, as I suspected. I'm now used to it, and understand the programming and the various features. It's pretty cool, being able to see which gears you're in and changing functions by pushing the buttons on the brakes/shifters (bifters??). My stoker and I are getting settled in on our new 'Dale. We've put about 150 miles on her this week, and next week, our first tandem century ride. We have that stop and start business down pretty well and I feel very comfortable captaining the beast. Things sure do speed up and slow down at a faster rate than a half bike, but that's momentum for you. Anybody on here riding the Cache Valley Century next week?

The term "brifters" is commonly used.

I also like "shiftake"... three syllables, rhymes with "mushroom". ;)
