˝ of the Civil War Century + campout!
Friday after work Nancy and I hustled ourselves west to Cunningham Falls State Park just outside of Thurmont, MD. Thurmont was the start/finish of the recent BBC event – the Civil War Century, which I missed unfortunately. But…better late (even a week late) than never!
We had our camp set up by 6:30 P.M and were cooking diner by seven. Lots of mid-to-small sized children running about but they all seemed to quiet down by nine. Morning broke and I rustled up some breakfast burritos – scrambled eggs, sausage and salsa plus black beans all cooked on an open fire….um um good!
I had printed out the route maps off the web site and figured the pavement markings would still be fresh, which they were. Since the cloud cover was low and there was a chance of showers, we did the 50 mile ride with only one battlefield. Out of Thurmont we headed north with the mountains as constant companions to our west. Only one climb of any consequence interrupted the mostly flat terrain. After miles and miles of narrow and car-less back roads, we found ourselves in a small town. The town of Fairfield PA was holding a giant community-wide yard sale about 10 blocks long on main street. We stopped for a cup of coffee and to look at all the semi-antiques.
On to the Gettysburg battlefield entering from the west, we spotted the observation tower. The view from the top was fantastic! On the way home we stopped at a very long covered bridge that was used by both the Confederate and Union armies during the conflict.

dude I can't imagine riding 50 miles after eating that burrito. I'd need a nap. And my stokewr would have had something to say about the black bean inclusion. We got rules about stuf like that. Oh, oh do I sound henpecked**********
