Can anyone recomend any units and possibly a wireless unit? I've done a little googling and found a couple but I'm interested in some feedback.

Personally, I would suggest against any device that limits your ability to hear road noise. I do safety for a living.

We have no interest or need, but there are many teams -- particularly families who ride triplets, quads, and quints -- who find them invaluable. No one, to my knowledge, has ever had any problems with picking up ambient sounds while using one of the intercom systems since, as sold, they only use one ear piece and boost voice levels to more audible levels. While I'm sure some folks are piping in audio while riding, we've not encountered them at Rallies, etc. I'd be far more concerned about folks who are now starting ride with stereo earbuds in both ears plugged into their IPods and MP3 players.

Good Morning!

My wife and I use the wired Tandem-com and really like it. I don't need it so much to hear her as she is right behind me, but it makes it much easier for her to hear me.

Here are a couple of positive thoughts:

1. As was a previous poster, I was intially concerned about the com blocking out road/traffic noise. The headset only has one earpiece (although it is on the left/traffic side) and it doesn't fit in the ear so you can hear sounds "past" it. I can still hear traffic coming up from behind. We don't use the music input option so all I have in my ear is the breathing/conversation of my beautiful bride!

2. The headset is no less comfortable than a pair of glasses. I wear both while riding and don't have any discomfort.

To be fair, here are my nit-picks:

3. The headset jacks on the com unit are _just_far enough apart to plug in the headsets. The plugs are touching each other when plugged in and they appear to be exerting pressure on the chassis of the com. It hasn't been a problem, but the tolerance is really tight.

4. The only "discomfort" I've had with the com was when my stoker saw a bald eagle on a ride and shouted to me "Do you see that bald eagle?"

All in all, I'm very happy with the com and we use it every time we go out.

I recently picked up a wired unit called "Tandem Talk." It comes directly from a small supplier out of Ohio, and in our use of it it works just fine. www.tandemtalk.com will get a person to the website.

Does anyone know the quality of the wireless unit from personal use? However $300 is a little steep for me so may just opt for the wired unit.

We are using the wireless unit and find it brilliant. It is expensive but we live in Sydney and commute 300kms a week in traffic. Its great not having to disconnect the cables when we stop which we did when using the wired tandem-com. The wireless version is a fair bit larger than the wired version. The photo on the precision tandems website isn't that good.
We broke the wires on both of the first headsets that we had. We have been a bit more gentle with the ones that came with the wireless version and have not have had any trouble. The 700ma battery that is supplied is supposed to last for about 5 hours. As our weekend rides usually exceed this, I swapped the 700ma Nicad battery for 2200ma Ni-Mh one. The batteries now last about a week.

Mollie and I LOVE our Tandem-Talk, www.tandem-talk.com. We bought ours from Mel at Tandems East for $109. It's great to be able to chat without having to raise our voices, and it doesn't drown out road noise at all because it only covers 1 ear.

Especially since she and I are newbies, the Tandem-Talk keeps us communicating more, and we can just chat about the scenery and things without having to yell. It's sweet.

Really, one has to wonder. My GF can hear everything I say even with me looking straight ahead. Her hearing is probably more acute than most but even so. Come the Apocalypse when we are nuked back to the Iron Age there won't be any fancy electronics supported and all the cyborgs will be the first of the poswar survivors to go down.
