I want to make one bikes steering column fixed then take off the front wheel on that bike and fasten it to the back wheel of another bike, then weld a supporting beem between them. Would this work? Has anyone done this?

i think we've all done this as kids, i know my brothers and i and our friends tried it. you don't have to weld just spread the front fork of the rear bike. then you will have a three wheeled tandem.

don't bother with this as a good ridable bike, it's more like a toy.

max, my wife and i usually ride our tandem but maybe i could bring the tandem out for one of the socal BF rides and you could be the stoker. maybe that would make it a little easier for the group since they seemed so worried that you are a minor.

I'm sure it has been many times, with and without the added support which, frankly, won't do much for you given the weakness of the joint at the rear drop-out / front fork axle interface. You'll end up with a two-seat, two-wheeled bicycle with independent drive that would be very unstable for adult riders of any substantial size and weight.

Finally, just a note about your subject line and use of 'redneck' as an attributive adjective....

Being a Yankee living in the south let note that my native colleagues and friends who happen to be proud Rednecks would likely take issue with your subject line. Most rednecks know how to weld and work metal and would simply farm-boy engineer and fabricate a proper interface between two single bikes that would probably be more robust than it needed to be. Rednecks aren't stupid...

But, then again, many folks -- and in particular some ignorant folks who publish definitions -- have never never taken time to understand the difference between a redneck and someone who just wishes they were good enough to be a redneck who take on the "redneck label" as a way trying to upclass themselves. Thus, the common and often times erroneous stereotype that even Jeff Foxworthy uses in his comedy can lead to some confusion. A lot of urban dullards attempt to co-opt similar upscale urban labels to do the same thing; after all, driving a car that you really can't afford to impress people you don't know who really can't do anything for you IS pretty stupid. Regardless, both result in stereotypes that are unkind to true Rednecks and equally well-adjusted, successful urbanites and intellectuals.

So, what you're describing is more or less a junk-yard or rattle-trap tandem...
