Just got a 2000 Cannondale RT1000 and was wondering if it's advisable to upgrade it to AVID Mechanical BB7 203mm Disk Brakes. Precision Tandem has a disk brake kit (#4) for Cannondale on their website for $225. Anyone done this upgrade on their tandem, specifically Cannondale?

We installed the Avid disc kit from Precision Tandem on the rear of our 2003 Cannondale RT1000. Works great. Much improved stopping power once the pads get seated in.

Thanks for the response BikeFreak45. Just a couple more questions if you don't mind,

1. Does the disc brake kit replaces the rear caliper brakes?
2. Is the kit only for the rear disc brake and does not come with the front disc brake assembly?

The kit we purchased was for the rear only. It does replace the existing rim brake, in our case that was a v-style brake. The rear disc kit uses an adapter that screws onto the threaded portion of your existing rear hub and the disc rotor than bolts to the adapter. To fit a disc brake to the front of your bike would require a new hub and probably a new fork as well. The fork on our bike does not have the tabs to attach the disc caliper to, I am quessing your fork is the same. We run the disc on the rear and the original v-style brake on the front. The bike stops well. I lean on the rear brake for most of the stopping power, using the front lightly for normal stops.
