Late 70's Ward Hawthorne

Just picked up a Wards "Hawthorne" from a nice guy in Livonia. $150.00 for a like new late seventies (I'm guessing right now) green and chrome machine. It is in such good shape. Weighs a lot. I would have to say around 50 pounds with all the steel. My wife said she would try tandem with me so we were going to test ride a modern one (still might) but when I found this one on craiglist for the price of a dinner out I had to pick it up.
Woo Hoo!

Yes, over 50 lbs! Do not judge all tandems by the Hawthorne. A fun bike for around the 'hood and maybe some of the local bike trails.
Enjoy!

It's too bad you weren't looking for a tandem last fall. I know the tandem you are talking about and that guy bought it for $25 from someone else on Craigslist. If I wasn't so busy with school and work I would have bought it back then myself. I do a little flipping on CL myself and that guy is totally flooding the market with some very inflated prices. I'm not saying $150 for that Hawthorne is bad, but some of his prices are just crazy. I guess that means good news for me because when I get a few more bikes on there my prices will seem more reasonable.
I must say though that the Hawthorne is a much more classy ride than my $150 tandem.
And by the way...where are you spending $150 on dinner? :) I'm not too far from you, are you buying? :D

Have fun with it, for that is the most important thing

Don't forget to post pics and let us know how you and your wife like your new bike. If you need any period correct parts or accessories PM me. I have a bunch of stuff taking up space in my garage and shed that I'd be happy to pass on free or cheap. The Classic and Vintage forum would love to see pics of this bike as well and can also help with any mechanical/restoration/upgrade/modification issues you may encounter.
And sure, a fancy brand new road tandem would be an amazing ride, but there's absolutly nothing like the feeling of sharing a ride on a beautiful old machine with the chrome shining in the sunset. Even if it is just for rides around the neighborhood it is a wonderful experience that you and your wife will almost definatly enjoy.
